Lady Cats take down Wellman-Union to open Tournament

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team got their Littlefield Tournament started with a victory on Thursday morning, as they took down Wellman-Union, 2-0; 25-15, 25-14.

With the win, the Lady Cats improved to 2-1 overall on the season, 1-0 in tournament play.

Mattie Seymore put Wellman-Union in front with a kill, but the lead was short-lived, as her next serve sailed into the net to tie the set, 1-1. Myli Hernandez and Madi Williams delivered a block on Mariah Cochran, which led to a Littlefield point to put them in front, 2-1.

Wellman-Union sent a hit into the net, but they were able to recover on the next play, as Cochran dropped in a tip off of Williams’block attempt for a kill, making the score, 3-2. Seymore sent a kill attempt sailing out of bounds and Bri Valdez followed it up with an ace off of Azayla Mercado to push their lead to, 5-2.

Cali Saldana kept the rally going, as she dropped in a tip over Cochran and Lis Cavazos for a kill to extend the lead to, 6-2.Ahit from Cochran landed out of bounds on the sideline and on the next play, Micaela Escobar was called for a double hit, stretching the Littlefield lead to, 8-2. Cavazos sent a kill sailing out of bounds, as Wellman-Union took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, a tip by Cavazos led to a bad set from Valdez, giving Wellman-Union the serve back with the score, 9-3. They could not capitalize, as Seymore sent the serve out of bounds to make the score, 10-3. Cali Saldana sent a hit into the net and Valdez was called for a double-hit on the set on the next play to cut the lead to, 10-5. However, Cochran sent a serve into the net to push the lead back to, 11-5, as Littlefield regained the serve.

A hit from Cavazos hit the foul pole and her next hit was into the net, making the score, 13-5, before Cali Saldana sent a serve short of the net. Cavazos followed it up with an ace off of Monica Elizondo, but a bad set by Wellman-Union fell short of the net on the next play, making the score, 147. Bryndle Ray delivered an ace off of Zoye Wise and Ellen Cadena sent a hit into the net on the next play to push the Littlefield lead to, 16-7.

A long break by Cali Saldana was killed at the net by Aliyah Depoyster, but Cadena’s next serve fell short of the net for Wellman-Union, making the score, 17-8. Madi Brown had her serve broke by Depoyster, but the ball was tipped out of bounds by Cali Saldana trimming the lead to, 17-9. Jerzee Harlan served up an ace and Littlefield was out of position on the next serve, cutting the lead to, 17-11.

Hernandez had a tip land out of bounds on the sideline, before she sent a kill attempt out of bounds, slicing the lead to, 17-13, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Harlan served up an ace off of Cali Saldana, before a tip from Hernandez fell in for a kill to end the run, making the score, 18-14.

Alyssa Torres served up an ace off of Wise and a tip from Hernandez was hit out of bounds by Cochran, making the score, 20-14. Seymore sent a kill sailing out of bounds and Torres followed it up with an ace off of Wise to make the score, 22-14. Cali Saldana delivered a kill off of Seymore, before her hit on the next play landed out of bounds, making the score, 23-15.

Cali Saldana had a hit blocked by Cochran, but the ball landed out of bounds for a Littlefield point andValdez closed out set one with an ace off of Seymore to give Littlefield the set, 2515.

Wellman-Union jumped out to an, 0-2 lead in set two, but a hit from Cali Saldana was hit into the net by Wise, making the score, 1-2. Micaela Escobar sent a hit short of the net off of the serve from Gabby Medina, but Cochran answered with a kill on the sideline to give Wellman-Union the lead, 2-3.

Cavazos was called for a double- hit to tie the set, 3-3 and Cavazos sent a return hit off of the serve from Teagan Miller, short of the net to give Littlefield their first lead of the set, 4-3. Miller’s next serve landed out of bounds, knotting the set at, 4-4, bit Cobi Saldana sent a hit into the net, making the score, 4-5.

Hernandez delivered a kill off of the block attempt by Cochran, but Cochran answered with a kill past Valdez to make the score, 5-6. Hernandez had a kill dug out by Cavazos as it floated back over the net and fell in for a kill, pushing the Wellman-Union lead to, 5-7. Cochran’s serve fell short of the net and on the next play, Cadena sent a kill out of bounds on the sideline, tying the set, 7-7.

A long break from Harlan off of the serve from Hernandez, was killed at the net by Maggie McNeese and Cavazos sent a hit sailing out of bounds on the sideline, making the score 9-7. Depoyster sent back-toback hits into the net, before she had a kill tipped out of bounds by Hernandez to make the score, 11-8.

Littlefield regained the serve, and Escobar was called for a double-hit before Torres sent a serve out of bounds on the sideline, making the score, 13-9. McNeese dropped in a kill in the back corner of the court and Ray followed it up with an ace off of Wise, pushing their lead to, 16-9.Akill by Cali Saldana was hit out of bounds by Cadena, as Wellman-Union took a time out to talk things over trailing Littlefield, 17-9.

Seymore sent a hit into the net off of the serve from Ray and Cali Saldana followed it up with a kill off of the block attempt by Depoyster, making the score, 19-9. McNeese delivered a kill, but Cali Saldana was called for touching the net on the next play, trimming the lead to, 20-10. Wellman-Union couldn’t capitalize, as Harlan sent a serve short of the net, making the score, 21-10.

A serve from Medina was returned into the net by Mercado, before Medina’s next serve sailed out of bounds, making the score, 22-11. Cochran had a kill attempt land out of bounds, but Cavazos answered with a kill for Wellman-Union to make the score, 23-12. Hernandez and Williams sent back-to-back kills into the net for Littlefield, but Seymore sent a serve out of bounds on the sideline and a save attempt from Escobar didn’t make it inside of the foul pole, as Littlefield took set two, 25-14, and the match 2-0.
