The Littlefield Rotary Club held their regular meeting on Thursday, June 13th.
Jimmy Ramos and Miriam Cueto were introduced to the Rotary Club; they recently attended RYLA Camp and provided the club program.
Cueto described the rough start as they were put into groups and her group seemingly had more Chiefs than Indians. They found it difficult to set aside personal gains for the good of the group.
Everything changed at an activity that tasked campers with recalling personal challenges in their lives. Cueto described the stories as heart-wrenching. It was then that the group better understood and respected each other. They ultimately built life-long friendships and didn’t want the camp to end. Ramos, too, agreed with Cueto. He found it hard to make connections early on, but said the activities indirectly brought them all together. They were both proud that they attended and would do it again if given the opportunity.
Rotarian Lupe Marquez further commented on Cueto’s recent achievements.
Cueto was selected from nine applicants who were sponsored by Lamb County Electric Cooperative LCEC. She, Denton Moore, and Garicyn Bigham were selected and sponsored by LCEC to attend the Government in Action Youth Tour.
147 students will go to Washington D.C. on June 17th from Texas. They will visit National Monuments, Smithsonian Museums, meet with students representing other electric, local cooperatives, and on Thursday, will meet with legislators at the U.S. Capitol.
Cueto and Moore were finalists for the Youth Leadership Council Texas representative seat. Each state will have one representative on the Youth Leadership Council. Rotarian Blake Moore’s son, Denton, was selected as the YLC representative from Texas, Marquez reported.
Lastly, Vargas informed the club of the global impact donated funds have to the Rotary International Foundation. His prelude led up to the announcement of Kay Franklin-Powell’s recent recognition as a Paul Harris Fellow +2 donator. Powell joined Rotary in 1990.
