S-E’s Xavyer Mosqueda to continue golf career at OPSU

Springlake-Earth senior, Xavyer Mosqueda, recently signed his Letter of Intent to continue his golf and academic career at Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

“It feels like a major sense of relief knowing that I will still be playing on a team and have that dynamic after high school,” Mosqueda said. “The main thing I wanted to get was to keep playing golf competitively and I accomplished that.”

The senior talked about what the recruiting process was like for him, saying, “The recruiting process was stressful to say the least. I knew that I had the talent and work ethic to play at the next level, but it was just stressful trying to get coaches to see that.”

Mosqueda was a three-sport athlete for the Wolverines, staring in baseball and track as well as golf.

Mosqueda was a three-time member of the district championship winning golf team, as well as a individual district champion this year. He was also part of the golf team that placed second at Regionals during his junior year and third at Regionals during his senior year. The Wolverine’s varsity golf team placed third at the State Golf Tournament during his junior year and finished fourth during his senior year by one stroke.

Mosqueda also qualified for Regionals during his freshman and sophomore campaign as well.

“My junior year was really a turning point in my golf career,” he explained. “I knew I wanted to play baseball competitively, but I didn’t know how much golf would impact my life.”

He added, “After my junior year, it became apparent that golf would be the next step for me.”

In baseball, Mosqueda was a two-time first-team All-District selection, was a pitching MVP, and Defensive MVP and his team made the play-offs all four years during his time on the team. In track, Mosqueda earned two District championships as a thrower, to Area Championships, was a threetime Regional qualifier and qualified for State in Shot Put during his senior year.

Mosqueda talked about what stuck out to him about OPSU over other schools, saying, “OPSU gave me a shot early and the coach really believed in me. I could tell the coach really cared more about things outside of golf such as grades and being a good person overall.”

He added, “There may have been a few school in the mix but none stood out to me like OPSU.”

The new Springlake- Earth graduate talked about his time spent as a Wolverine, saying, “I think my time. as a Wolverine has prepared me to be extremely competitive in any aspect, whether it be in the classroom or on the golf course. Competing against not only other competitors but also my teammates has made it to where improving my game and staying competitive isn’t a problem.”

He added, “It will be a pretty big change moving to a different team and having to compete with different people as well as making new friends. This team that we took to state the past two years have become brothers to me.”

Mosqueda talked about his favorite memory from his time as a Wolverine, saying, “The time I spent with my teammates and family on the golf course. Wether it be in triumph or failure I still treasure those moments. But more so the triumphs of course.”

Lastly, he talked about how his family has supported him throughout his career, stating, “My family has been there every second of the way in my golf career. I couldn’t thank them enough for helping pay for clubs, lessons, green fees, and any other costs that come with golf.”

He added, “I have no doubt in my mind that I would not be playing golf at the next level if it weren’t for my family. They were my biggest support when I was playing great and always my cushion to fall on when I wasn’t.”

Mosqueda said that he is just going for basics to start off college, but finds himself leaning towards business or engineering for a major.
