Wildcats cruise past Stanton for Bi-district victory

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team defeated the Stanton Buffaloes on Tuesday to claim the Class 3A Bi-district trophy at the DAG in Denver City.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 30-3 overall on the season.

Senior, Jeremiah Trevino drove the middle for a lay-up to open the game and junior, Ryan Williams, followed it up with an outlet pass to junior, Chip Green for a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 4-0. Ryan Williams kept it going with a layup off of a steal by the Wildcats in their own end, stretching the lead to, 6-0, as Stanton called for a time out with 6:23 remaining in the opening quarter.

Out of the break, junior, Kam McCarty, drove to the basket for a lay-up, drawing an and-one foul on Aidan Armendarez. He converted the free throw to make the score, 9-0, with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Wildcats kept the offense going, as Ryan Williams buried a three from the left elbow off of an assist from senior, MJ Randle, and Randle followed it up with a steal on the defensive end, dishing the outlet pass ahead to McCarty for a fast-break lay-up, extending the lead to, 14-0.

Senior, Ja’Den Williams, took a charge on Nathan Armendarez, but Stanton was able to regain possession, as Bret Davis drained a three from the right elbow to get the Buffaloes on the board, trailing, 14-3, with 1:23 to play in the first quarter. Jayden Barrio knocked down a three from the top of the key off of an assist from Ja’Den Williams to close out the first quarter with Littlefield in front, 17-3.

Green drained a three from the left elbow off of an assist from McCarty to open the second frame and McCarty hit Trevino in transition for a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 22-3, with just under a minute gone in the second quarter. Green picked up a steal near mid-court and passed it ahead to Ryan Williams for an easy lay-up, as Staton took a full time out with 6:44 to play in the first half.

Out of the break, McCarty drove the left baseline, dumping the ball off to Trevino for a lay-up, making the score, 26-3. With five minutes to play in the half, Javion Thompson dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Jahir Galindo, trimming the lead to, 26-5.

Ryan Williams would answer with a three from the right wing off of an assist from Randle and on the next play, Green sent the outlet pass ahead to Ryan Williams, who bounced it across the court to a cutting Trevino, who drew a blocking foul on Aidan Aremndarez. He converted both free throws, pushing their lead to, 31-5.

With 2:27 left to play in the half, senior, Omar Martinez, scored back-to-back lay-ups off of steals, stretching the lead to, 35-5, with under a minute to play in the half. With time winding down in the second quarter, Galindo was fouled on an attempt by senior, Sir Pratt. He made one-of-two shots from the line, trimming the lead to, 35-6, going into the locker room at halftime.

Galindo drove to the basket for a lay-up off of a turnover by Green to open the second half for Stanton and Davis followed it up with a three from the right wing, cutting the lead to, 35-11. Green dropped in a put-back off of a miss by McCarty to get the Wildcats on the board in the second half, but Jake Benedict knocked down a jumper from the right wing off of an assist from Davis, making the score, 37-13, with just under six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

With 5:42 remaining in the quarter, Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Nic Haas. Trevino converted both shots from the line, making the score, 39-13. On the other end, Galindo was fouled on a put-back attempt by Ryan Williams. He split the attempts at the line, trimming the lead to, 39-14. Green would answer with a three from the right elbow off of an assist from McCarty and Trevino followed it up with an outlet pass to McCarty for a lay-up on the fast-break, stretching the lead back out to, 44-14.

Galindo was fouled on an attempt by Trevino and split the free throws, but on the other end, Ryan Williams grabbed an offensive rebound and knocked down a jumper from the right elbow on a thirdchance opportunity, pushing the lead to, 46-15, with just under four minutes to play in the third.

Benedict dropped in a lay-up for the Buffaloes, but Randle answered with a drive to the basket for a lay-up on the other end, to make the score, 48-17. Oscar Salcido dropped in another lay-up for Stanton, but Ja’Den Williams hit a cutting Martinez for a lay-up and Martinez banked in a three from the top of the key to close out the third quarter with Littlefield in front, 53-19.

Trevino opened the fourth quarter with a lay-up in transition off of an assist from Randle and he followed it up with an outlet pass to Green for a fast-break lay-up, stretching their lead to, 57-19, with 6:13 left to play. Ryan Willaims drove the lane dishing a no-look pass to Trevino for a lay-up and Trevino repaid the favor on the next play hitting Ryan Williams for a lay-up to make the score, 61-19.

Green dropped in a put-back off of a miss by Randle, but Thomson answered with a bucket to trim the lead to, 63-21. With 4:06 to play, Ryan Williams knocked down a short pull-up jumper in the lane and Green followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal, pushing their lead to, 67-21. Green was fouled on an offensive rebound by Seth Stovall with 3:14 left to play. He sank both free throws as Stanton took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Thompson scored back-to-back lay-ups and David dropped in a lay-up to cut the lead to, 69-27, with 1:36 left to play. Davis was fouled on an attempt by Ja’Den Williams and split the free throws to make the score, 69-28. With under a minute to play in the game, Hass was fouled on an attempt by Pratt and made oneof- two from the line, as Littlefield went on to take the contest, 69-29.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Green, who tallied 20 points, five rebounds and four steals. He was joined in double-figures scoring by Trevino, who netted 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks and Ryan Williams, who chipped in 14 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

Martinez contributed nine points, three rebounds and three steals, while McCarty tallied seven points, four assists, three steals and one block, and Barrio contributed three points, three steals, one rebound, one assist and one block. Randle tallied two points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal, while Pratt grabbed five rebounds and one block.

Josiah Garcia added two rebounds, while Ja’Den Williams finished with four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

The Wildcats took on # 19 Childress in the Class 3A Area round on Friday at Floydada High School. Results were not available at press time.
