The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team used a strong finish to put away the Floydada Whirlwinds on Tuesday, 68-58.
With the win, the Wildcats improved to 9-0 overall on the season.
Omar Martinez started the break, dishing the ball to Jeremiah Trevino, who passed it to Kam McCarty in transition for a lay-up to open the contest, but Sergio Valadez answered with a three from the right wing, putting Floydada in front, 3-2. McCarty took the ball to the hoop for a lay-up to regain the lead for Littlefield, but Braun Hobbs answered with a put-back off of his own miss to keep the Whirlwinds in front, 5-4, with 6:20 remainingin the opening quarter.
McCarty knocked down a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Martinez to give Littlefield a onepossession lead and Jeremiah Trevino drove the baseline for a lay-up off of the assist from McCarty, pushing their lead to, 9-5, with just under five minutes to play in the first quarter. Hagen Hinsley dropped in a lay-up for Floydada off of the blocked shot by Martinez, but on the other end, Chip Green grabbed an offensive rebound off of his own miss and was fouled on the put-back attempt by Hagen Hinsley. He converted both free throws to push the lead to, 11-7.
Jeremiah Trevino hit Green with a no-look pass for a lay-up, but with 1:27 to play in the quarter, Tyrean Henderson drained a three from the top of the key, off of the screen from Hagen Hinsley, as Floydada took a time out trailing, 13-10. Out of the break, Sir Pratt was fouled on the floor by Henderson and sank one-of-two free throws to push their lead to, 1410.
Manny Delafuente drained a three from the right wing off of the assist from Henderson to make it a one-point game, but on the other end, MJ Randle was fouled on the floor by Delafuente earning a trip to the line. Randle made one-of-two from the line, however on the other end, Henderson dropped in a floater from the wing to tie the game, 15-15, as the first quarter came to a close.
Martinez opened the second frame with a three off of the assist from Ja’Den Williams and on their next possession, Green was fouled on an attempt by Henderson; he sank both free throws, stretching their lead back to, 20-15, with just over six minutes to play in the half. Hobbs dropped in a floater over Jayden Barrio on the right side and Henderson went coast-tocoast on the next play for a lay-up to cut the lead to one-point, 20-19.
Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a layup and then pump-faked for a lay-up on their next possession, off of the assist from Ja’Den Williams, pushing their lead back out to, 24-19. With 3:18 to play in the half, Green sent the outlet pass down court to Jeremiah Trevino, who passed it to Martinez for the lay-up making the score, 26-19, as Floydada took a time out to talk things over with 3:17 to play in the half.
Out of the break, Jeremiah Trevino picked up a steal from Henderson, sending the outlet pass down court to Martinez, who finished the play with a lay-up to stretch their lead to, 28-19. Martinez sent an outlet pass down court to Green for a lay-up on the fast-break, but Hobbs answered with a put-back on the other end to stop the bleeding for Floydada.
The Whirlwinds took a charge on McCarty with 1:42 to play in the half, andAiden Trevino followed it up with a three from the left elbow to make it a six-point game, 30-24. Martinez answered with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Green, but Henderson responded for Floydada with a lay-up to make the score, 33-26. With under one minute remaining in the half, Green dropped in a put-back, drawing an and-one foul on Hobbs. He converted the free throw to make the score, 36-26, going into the locker room at halftime.
Valadez opened the second half with a three from the right elbow, but Jeremiah dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from McCarty and Martinez followed it up with a steal, dishing it ahead to McCarty for the lay-up, as he drew an and-one foul on Henderson. He converted the free throw, making the score, 41-29, with 6:19 to play in the third quarter.
Valadez dropped in a lay-up off of the turnover by Green, but Jeremiah Trevino answered with a lay-up off of the assist from McCarty, making the score, 43-31.Aiden Trevino dropped in a lay-up for Floydada, but on the other end, McCarty responded with a lay-up off of the assist from Green, as he drew an and-one foul on Hobbs. He converted the free throw, pushing their lead to, 46-33, with 4:51 to play in the quarter.
Aiden Trevino took the ball in for a lay-up and Henderson followed it up on the defensive end, taking a charge on McCarty with 4:21 to play in the quarer. Hobbs capitalized, driving to the hoop for a lay-up, drawing an andone foul on Randle. He converted the free throw to cut the lead to eight points, 46-38. Hobbs took a charge on Martinez and followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Henderson, making the score, 46-40, as Littlefield took a time out with 3:22 to play in the quarter.
Out of the break, Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Barrio, but Henderson scored a lay-up in the lane and Hagen Hinsley followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Hobbs, cutting the lead to, 48-44, with just over two minutes to play in the game. Hobbs took a charge on Jeremiah Trevino and on the next play, Hagen Hinsley was fouled on an attempt by Ja’Den Williams. He made one-of-two shots from the line, trimming the lead t0, 48-45.
With under a minute to play, Hobbs knocked down a fall-away jumper from the elbow and Aiden Trevino scored a lay-up in transition to give Floydada the lead, 49-48, with 29.3 seconds to play in the quarter. Jeremiah Trevino answered with a lay-up, but with time winding down in the quarter, Aiden Trevino was fouled on an attempt by Green and he split the free throws to tie the game, 50-50, going into the final quarter of play.
Jeremiah Trevino dropped in a layup to open the fourth quarter and Martinez took a charge on Aiden Trevino with 7:12 to play in the game. Floydada took a time out to prevent a turnover with with 6:29 remaining, and out of the break, Hobbs knocked down a pull-up jumper in the lane to tie the game, 52-52. Valadez drove to the bucket for a lay-up, but Jeremiah Trevino scored off of an assist from Randle to keep the game tied, 54-54, as Littlefield took a time out with 5:11 remaining in the contest.
Henderson dropped in a floater in the lane for Floydada, but on the other end, McCarty drove the lane, dishing the ball to cutting Green on the back side, who was fouled on the attempt by Valadez. He converted both free throws to tie the game, 56-56, with 4:23 left to play.
Barrio sent an outlet pass down court that was finished off with a layup by Jeremiah Trevino, however Henderson answered on the other end with a put-back off of his own miss to keep the game tied, 58-58. With 2:21 remaining, Martinez was fouled on a put-back attempt by Hobbs, who picked up his fourth foul of the game. Martinez split the free throws to give Littlefield a one-point advantage, 5958.
McCarty drove the lane, kicking the ball out to Martinez, who knocked down a three from the left elbow, stretching the lead to, 62-58. Martinez sent an outlet pass down court to McCarty on the fast-break, as he finished the play with a lay-up, pushing the lead to, 64-58, as Floydada took a time out with 58.6 seconds to play in the game.
Out of the break, McCarty picked up a loose ball off the turnover by Henderson and was fouled on the fastbreak by Henderson, who fouled out of the contest with 53.4 to play. McCarty converted both free throws and Ja’Den Williams hit Martinez on the next play on a back-door cut for a lay-up, pushing the lead to, 68-58, as Littlefield went on to take the contest.
Trevino led the team in scoring with 20 points, to go along with nine rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block, while McCarty tallied 17 points, five assists, two rebounds and one steal, and Martinez added 16 points, five rebounds, five assists two blocks and one steal.
Green also finished in double-figures scoring with 13 points, to go along with nine rebounds and two assists, while Randle added one point, one rebound, one assist and one steal, and Pratt tallied one point and two rebounds.
Ja’Den Williams added three rebounds and three assists, while Barrio finished with four assists and two rebounds.
The Wildcats were at the Farwell Tournament this weekend. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against Slaton.
