The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team fell to the Sundown Roughettes at home on Tuesday, 70-40, in non-district play.
With the loss, the Fillies fall to 0-7 overall on the season.
Kaleigh Geldenhuys was fouled on a put-back attempt by Hannah Holdman to open the first quarter; she converted both attempts from the line to put the Fillies in front, 2-0, but Camry Jourden answered with a put-back attempt on the other end for Sundown to tie the game, 2-2. With just under six minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Holdman was fouled on an attempt by Evelyn Matute. She made both shots at the free-throw line to put the Roughettes in front, 4-2.
However, on the other end, Sarah Chavira drove the left side of the lane for a lay-up to tie the game, 4-4, with 5:25 remaining in the opening quarter. Jourden picked up a steal for Sundown was fouled on the fast- break attempt by Geldenhuys; she made one of two shots at the line to regain the lead for Sundown, but it was shortlived, as Kambri Ruiz dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Analise Ramage, putting Olton back in front, 6-5.
With 3:43 remaining in the quarter, Amie Beelitz was fouled on a put- back attempt by Kyndal Taggart, earning a trip to the line. She made one of two-shots to make it a one-possession Olton lead, 7-5. Allie McCormick would score back-to-back lay-ups for the Roughettes to regain the lead, 97, but on the defensive end, Ramage took a charge on McCormick, regaining possession for Olton.
With 2:17 to play in the first quarter, Beelitz was fouled on a defensive rebound by Aubrey Rodgers, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throws, trimming the lead to one point, 9-8. McCormick would score a lay-up on an inbound play and Jourden went coast-to-coast for a lay-up on their next possession, making the score, 13-8, with 1:26 to play in the quarter.
McCormick was fouled at the buzzer by Ruiz and split the free throws, as Sundown took a, 14-8, lead into quarter number two.
Ruiz opened the second frame with a jumper from the left wing, but Jourden answered for Sundown with a lay-up off of an Olton turnover to stretch their lead to, 18-8. With 6:08 remaining in the first half, McCormick was fouled on an attempt by Ramage and split the free throws, making the score, 19-8. Taggart banked in a jumper from the right wing, but on the next play, Ramage took a charge on Holdman to regain possession for the Fillies with the score, 21-8.
McCormick got the ball ahead to Holdman in transition for a layup and McCormick was fouled on a shot attempt by Emma Acker with 4:31 remaining in the half; she split the free throws to push the lead to, 26-8, but with 3:13 to play in the half, Chavira was fouled on an attempt by Aubrey Rodgers, earning a trip to the line. She converted one-of-two shots from the line to trim the lead to, 26-9.
McCormick converted a pair of free throws after being fouled by Ruiz, but Olton answered, as Yarely Santillan went coast-tocoast for a lay-up on the right side, and she followed it up with a putback off of a miss by Ramage to cut the lead to, 28-13. With under a minute remaining in the first half, McCormick dropped in a lay-up in tranisiton, but Ramage answered with a three from the left elbow off of an assist from Geldenhuys, making the score, 29-16, going into the locker room at halftime.
McCormick opened the third quarter with a steal taking it the other way for a lay- up, but Ramage answered with a put-back on the other end, to make the score, 31-18. Holdman scored a second- chance bucket and McCormick followed it up with a three from the left elbow to push the Sundown lead to, 36-18, with 6:29 remaining in the quarter. McCormick dropped in back-toback lay-ups off of steals, as Olton took a time out with 4:38 to play in the quarter, trailing, 40-18.
Out of the break, Ramage dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Geldenhuys, but on the next play, McCormick was fouled on an attempt by Struve, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws to make the score, 4220. Geldenhuys dropped in a layup for the Fillies, but Sundown responded, as Holdman drained a three from the right elbow, and McCormick followed it up with a transition lay-up off of a steal to push their lead to, 47-22, with 3:13 to play in the third.
With 2:15 remaining in the quarter, Santillan was fouled on an attempt by Jourden; she made oneof- two shots from the line to make the score, 47-23. McCormick dropped in a transition lay-up for Sundown and Jourden followed it up with a three from the right elbow to make the score, 52-23. Ramage would close out the quarter for Olton with a pull-up jumper in the lane, making the score, 5225, heading into the final quarter of play.
Jamie Sims dished the ball to McCormick on a two-on-one break for a lay-up, but Struve answered with a three from the left elbow to trim the lead to, 54-28. Sundown would respond with back-to-back buckets, but Chavira drove the left side for a lay-up for Olton making the score, 58-30, with five minutes left to play. Holdman buried a three for the Roughettes and McCormick followed it up with a lay-up in transition, before Struve buried another three from the left elbow to make the score, 63-33.
With 3: 15 left to play, McCormick picked up a steal from Santillan, taking it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, but Olton would respond, as Ramage knocked down a jumper from the left elbow, making the score, 6535. Olton took a time out with 2:02 remaining and out of the break, Struve drove to the basket for a lay-up, but Holdman would drop in a lay-up on the other end off of an inbound play and Talia Acevedo drained a three from the left wing to make the score, 70-37. Ramage buried a three in the closing seconds from the left elbow, as Olton fell to Sundown, 70-40.
Ramage led the Fillies in scoring with 14 points, while Struve tallied eight points and Chavira and Santillan each contributed five points. Geldenhuys chipped in four points, while Beelitz and Ruiz each finished with two points in the contest.
The Fillies traveled to Dimmitt on Tuesday to take on the Bobbies. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Thursday when they travel to Whiteface to begin a three-day tournament.
