The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team improved to 4-2 on the season, as they opened district play on Friday with a win over Hale Center, 20-7.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 1-0 in district play.
Sudan totaled 349 yards of offense, including 225 rushing yards and 124 passing yards.
Senior quarterback, Trent Wilson connected with Caleb Groetken on a 20-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring in the first quarter for the Hornets, but the PAT by Wilson was no good, leaving the score, 6-0. Wilson would find Salvador Juarez on a 23-yard touchdown pass later in the quarter to extend their lead to, 14-0, after Wilson’s two-point conversion pass to Juarez, as the first quarter came to a close.
The score stood going into the locker room at halftime, and in the third quarter, Hale Center scored on a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown and they converted the PAT, to trim the lead to, 14-7. Sudan would respond, as Marcello King got loose for a 24yard touchdown run. The Hornets missed on the two-point conversion, leaving the score, 20-7.
The Hornets would hold Hale Center scoreless the rest of the game, as they took the districtopener, 20-7. Offensively, Wilson finished the game seven-of-15 passing for 124 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while adding 16 carries for 111 yards.
King led the rushing attack with 25 carries for 114 yards and a score.
Jaibryn Ornelas led the receiving game with four catches for 51 yards, while Alan Flores chipped in one catch for 30 yards. Juarez tallied one catch for 23 yards and a touchdown, while Groetken contributed one catch for 20 yards and a score.
Defensively, Juarez led the team in total tackles with eight, while Matthew Lopez tallied seven tackles, including five for loss. Flores chipped in eight tackles and an interception, while King also hauled in an interception and Jaden Conley finished with four tackles and a fumble recovery.
The Hornets will be at home on Friday to take on Lockney.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
