The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity baseball team swept the season series with Muleshoe on Tuesday, taking their second meeting of the season, 9-3.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 15-7 overall, 6-3 in district play.
In the top of the first inning, Major McNeese grounded out to Jake Villanueva at first base for out number one, but Dawson Adkins drew a walk and took second on a wild pitch, before Adam MacDonald singled through the left side. He took second on the throw in from the outfield, putting runners on second and third with one out for Littlefield.
Adkins scored on a passed ball, as MacDonald advanced to third on the play, making the score, 1-0, and Chip Green drew a walk, putting runners on the corners for the Wildcats. MacDonald scored on an error by the catcher, Riley Railsback, pushing the lead to, 20, before Ian Mendez flew out to Nehemiah Sanchez in right field.
Redman singled on a hard ground ball to left field, but Jakob Kirkland lined out to Mauricio Herrera at shortstop to retire the side.
In the home-half of the first, Johnny Hernandez struck out swinging for out number one and Herrera grounded out to Adkins at second base for out number two. Ryan Dominguez singled to right field, but McNeese was able to get Villanueva to go down swinging to end the inning.
Both teams were kept off the board in the second inning, but in the top of the third, Adkins led things off with a single to left field and MacDonald laid down a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, Brayton Butler, who got the out at first, as Adkins advanced to second on the play. Green and Mendez drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, and Redman walked to bring in a run and make the score, 3-0.
Jakob Kirkland drove in a run with an RBI-single to left field, stretching the lead to, 4-0, and Jayden Kirkland followed it up with a sacrifice bunt to Butler on the mound, who got the out at first as Mendez scored to make the score, 5-0. McNeese, though, would strike out swinging to retire the side.
The Wildcats defense made quick work of the Mules in the bottom of the third inning, as McNeese got Butlet to strike out looking and he got Hernandez to strike out swinging for two outs. Herrera laid down a bunt, bunt, but it was fielded by McNeese, as he threw to first for the out to end the inning.
The score would remain, 5-0, until the top of the sixth inning when the Wildcats came back up to bat.
Jayden Kirkland led off the inning with a double to left field, as Blayton Soliz came on as the courtesy runner for the catcher. Soliz stole third on a passed ball and Gabriel Villanueva drove him in with an RBI-single to center field, extending their lead to, 6- 0. Villanueva stole second on a passed ball, but three pitches later, he got caught to far off the bag and was picked-off by Railsback for out number one.
McNeese and Adkins drew back-to-back walks for the Wildcats, but MacDonald struck out swinging for out number two. Green was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Mendez struck out looking to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Butler gave the Mules a base runner with a single to center field and Hernandez laid down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Green and thrown to first for the out, as Butler advanced to second on the play. Herrera singled to right field, putting runners on the corners for Muleshoe, and Dominguez hit a grounder to Mendez at shortstop, reaching on an error, as a run scored to trim the lead to, 6-1.
Villanueva struck out swinging for out number two before the runners advanced to second and third on a pitch. Donovan Moreno drove in a run with a single to Mendez at shortstop, making the score, 6-2, and Julian Vargas singled on a grounder to McNeese to load the bases for the Mules. Railsback drew a walk to bring in a run, trimming the lead to, 6-3, but McNeese got Sanchez to strike out swinging to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, Redman drew a lead-off walk and Jakob Kirkland singled to left field, moving Redman to third to put runners on the corners for Littlefield. Jayden Kirkland blasted an RBI-double to left field, as Redman scored and Jakob Kirkland advanced to third, making the score, 7-3.
The Sudan Nettes’ varsity golf team competed at the District Gold Tourmanet this week where they claimed the team district championship.
