Week eight of the Lamb County Leader-New’s annual football contest in the books, as we inch closer and closer to the end of the season.
This week, Ronnie Martin, Sam Castillo, Brenda Herrell and J.C. Orozco all tied for the top spot each going 16-4. The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the Carolina Panthers and the Miami Dolphins, which was 63 points. Sam Castillo took first place with a guess of 52 points.
We had a tie forcing an even split for the second and third place prizes, as J.C. Orozco and Martin each guessed 48 points. They split the second and third place prizes evenly.
In the high school ranks, Littlefield dismantled Stanton, 6021, while Springlake-Earth opened district with a victory over Anton, 68-18, and Olton moved to 2-0 in district with a, 39-7, victory over Sundown. Brock blasted Whitesboro, 63-3, while Sudan came up short against Lockney, 3834.
Happy took down Booker, 48-22, while Roosevelt defeated Abernathy, 36-21, and Ropes downed Morton, 54-6. Post took care of Tahoka, 48-14, while Stratford took down Panhandle, 3422.
In the college ranks, Florida State blasted Syracuse, 41-3, while Arizona pulled off a huge upset over Washington State, 44-6. Oregon State took down UCLA, 36-24, while Tennessee bested Texas A&M, 2013. Washington upset Oregon, 3633.
In the NFL, the Commanders took down the Falcons, 24-6, while the Vikings edged out the Bears, 19-13, and the Browns shocked the 49ers, 19-17. The Jaguars took down the Colts, 37-20, while the Raiders defeated the Patriots, 21-17.
Those who finished 15-5 this week were Tommy Cloninger, Johnny Rosemond, Jonathan Magallanes, Richard Orozco, David Neinast and Charlie Smith, while Martin Duran, Lonnie Neinast and Alma Castillo each finished 14-6. Those who went 13-7 this week include, Ivan Estrada, Donna Neinast, Dewayne Hayes, Stevy Smith and Juan Garza.
Larry Ashley, JR Herrell, Mark Grace and Danny Sanders each went 12-8, while Oscar Sanchez, Maria Pinon, Teresa Dabrowski and James Hood each went 11-9. Ed Dabrowski, Thomas Blackstone and Jimmy Garcia each finished 10-10 this week, while Robin Elliott finished 9-11 and Terrill Moorhead finished 7-13.
In the overall standings, Duran still clings to the top spot with 118 points, while Martin and Cloninger are tied for second with 114 points and Brend Herrell and Rosemond are tied for third with 113 points. Magallanes is in fourth with 112 points, while J.C. Orozco, Richard Orozco and David Neinast are tied for fifth with 111 points.
Lonnie Neinast is in sixth with 110 points, while Estrada is in seventh with 107 points and Sam Castillo, Donna Neinast and Hayes are tied for eighth with 106 points. Charlie Smith and Alma Castillo are tied for ninth with 104 points each and Stevy Smith and Sanchez each round out the top 10 with 103 points.
