Water leak repaired, water restored to town

Water leak 3-16-23 2:00 am On March 16th, in the early morning hours the City of Littlefield’s on-call serviceman received a low water alarm. The crew tried to isolate the big 12” trunk line here in town at Duggan and 4th Street. They were unable to isolate it because of the nature of the distribution line and all of the lines it feeds. Wells were not able to keep up due to the 4’ long crack in the cast iron line.

The decision to turn off the wells to reduce pressure enough to attempt a repair came at 7 a.m. The crew worked quickly to cut the 10’ section out and replace it. Note that water continued to drain through the pipe while repairs were made.

The repair was completed at 1 p.m. As soon as the repair was completed and pressure restored, samples were taken throughout town as mandated by the State when pressure drops below 20 psi in the system.

“We normally run at a pressure of just under 60 psi. We received an “all clear”, as suspected, just before 5 p.m. on Friday,” City Manager Mitch Grant said.

He added, “All things considered, the crew did a great job in getting pressure restored as quickly as possible.”
