Walker, Duran tied for top spot as Bowl Contest draws closer to end

The Bowl Blowout Challenge is in full swing at the Lamb County Leader-News, with the majority of games already in the books, as well as the first and second round of the College Football Play-off.

In the second round of the playoffs, Penn State rolled past Boise State on New Year’s Eve, 31-14, in the Fiesta Bowl. On New Year’s Day, what started out as a blowout between Texas and Arizona State, turned into a double overtime barn burner, that saw Texas prevail, 39-31, in the Peach Bowl. Ohio State closed out the night at the Rose Bowl, blasting the #1 ranked Oregon Ducks, 41-21.

After a postponement Wednesday, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and the Georgia Bulldogs squared off in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday, where the Irish defeated the Bulldogs, 23-10, to complete the field for the CFP Semi-Finals.

The Longhorns will take on Ohio State at the Cotton Bowl on Friday, Jan. 10th, while the Fighting Irish will take on Penn State on Thursday, Jan. 9th at the Orange Bowl.

In the Bowl games, Northern Illinois prevailed over Fresno State in double overtime, 28-20, to win the Potato Bowl, while South Florida edged out San Jose State, 41-39, in five overtimes at the Hawai’i Bowl, and Toledo won a shootout over Pittsburgh in six overtimes at the Sports Bowl, 4846.

Kansas State rallied past Rutgers, 44-41, in the Rate Bowl, while Arkansas State took down Bowling Green, 38-31, in the 68 Ventures Bowl. Syracuse blasted Washington State, 52-35, in the Holiday Bowl, and Navy took down the Oklahoma Sooners in the Armed Forces Bowl, 21-20.

In the Birmingham Bowl, Vanderbilt defeated Georgia Tech, 35-27, while Arkansas took down Texas Tech in the Liberty Bowl, 39-26, and USC defeated Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl, 3531. Iowa State won a shootout over Miami (FL), 42-41, at the Pop-Tarts Bowl, and BYU took down Colorado, 36-14, in the Alamo Bowl.

The Army game was a wash for everybody, because their original opponent, Marshall opted out of the bowl, so they ended up playing Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl, who they beat, 27-6. UConn took down North Carolina, 27-14, in the Fenway Bowl, and Nebraska beat Boston College, 2015 in the Pinstripe Bowl.

TCU blasted Louisiana in the New Mexico Bowl, 34-3, while Miami (OH) throttled Colorado State, 43-17, in the Arizona Bowl. East Carolina edged out NC State in the Military Bowl, 26-21, and Missouri won the Music City Bowl over Iowa, 27-24. Michigan held off Alabama, 19-13, in the ReliaQuest Bowl, and Illinois took down South Carolina, 21-17, in the Citrus Bowl.

Louisville edged out Washington, 35-34 in the Sun Bowl, while LSU held off Baylor, 44-31, in the Texas Bowl and Ole Miss blasted Duke in the Gator Bowl, 52-20.

The Bowl Blowout Challenge this year had 17 contestants.

Tim Walker and Martin Duran are tied for the top spot with 56 points, while JC Orozco is close behind with 53 points and Mark Grace is next with 48 points. Rocky Bowman and Maria Pinon are tied with 46 points, while Richard Orozco and Micky Orozco are tied with 45 points.

Stetson Sedberry has 44 points, while Johnny Rosemond and Larry Ashley are tied with 43 points, and Lance Patridge and John Hernandez are tied with 42 points. Amanda Martin has 41 points, while Bill Albus has 40 points, Joe Lopez has 34 points and Patricia Lopez has 29 points.
