Following the retirement of Brenda Goheen, Tammy Kirkland, a long-time deputy clerk in the Lamb County Tax Assessor-Collector Office, has been appointed to the position of County Tax Assessor-Collector. Brenda Goheen officially retired on Dec. 31, 2021.

Mrs. Kirkland was appointed to fill the position after meeting all the requirements of the Lamb County Commissioners Court. Although Tammy is new to the title, she has been a familiar face in the community and the County Tax Office for the past 17 years.

She was hired as a Deputy Tax Clerk in May of 2004, and was promoted to Chief Deputy Clerk in 2013, the position she has held until her recent appointment as Tax Assessor-Collector.

She knows the office literally from the ground up.

Mrs. Kirkland went to high school in Anton until she married at the age of 16. She earned her GED two years later. She has worked in the Littlefield community at many businesses including K-Bob’s Steakhouse, the Jolly Roger Convenience Store and at Jack’s Bakery. She at times held down two jobs.

During her employment at the bakery, Bill Rodgers, president of First Federal Savings and Loan, came in for donuts and suggested she apply for an open position at the bank. She got the position in 1992 and was employed there until her family moved to New Braunfels, Texas in 2001. The family returned to Littlefield in 2004 and she started at the Lamb County Tax Accessor-Collector office in May of that year.

She and her husband, Jeff, have been married for 26 years. They are parents of four children: Crystal Kirkland, Joshua Pickard and wife, Josh Kirkland, and Kami Pickard, who are all life-long residents of Littlefield. The Kirklands have 12 grandchildren. Tammy said,” We can eventually field our own baseball team.”

Mrs. Kirkland wishes to encourage people to embrace a serious work ethic. “Even if a formal college education is out of reach, one can still work their way to a good life by accepting challenges and being willing to learn different skills. On the job training is an education too. Don’t give up.”
