The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team will be hosting the Olton Mustangs on Friday as the 2021 campaign gets underway.
Head Coach John Cornelius gave his thoughts on their scrimmages, saying, “I felt like the scrimmages were good. We were able to get a lot of our younger players quality reps.”
He added, “I was pleased with the physicality and intensity of the defense and we had some good moments on offense as well.”
Mustang Head Coach Ross Lassiter talked about what he saw from their two scrimmages, saying, “We feel like we improved over the last two weeks with our scrimmages. Offensively, we were able to move the ball against Tahoka and Muleshoe.”
He added, “We feel like we need to improve in the run game. Defensively, we did a decent job overall. We gave up a few big plays and we will need to improve on that.”
The cross-county Olton Mustangs come to town on Friday looking for payback as the Hornets have taken the last three meetings with the Mustangs.
Coach Cornelius talked about the match-up, saying, “Offensively, we have to protect the ball, pick up first downs and execute at a high level.”
He added, “Defensively, we will have to cover well in the back end and pressure the quarterback. We need to make sure we fit the run well, gang tackle and don’t give up the big play.” Coach Lassiter gave his
Coach Lassiter gave his thoughts on the showdown with Sudan, saying, “Offensively, we need to be able to run the ball effectively and take what they give us in the passing game.”
He added, “On defense, we need to be really good at getting Sudan off the field on third down. We also need to win on special teams.”
The Hornets and Mustangs will square off at the Hornets’ Nest on Friday in Sudan.
Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
