The Sudan Cemetery Board along with the entire community invites you to help us raise money to finish the chapel project.
In the fall of 2021, a group of community members met to address the need of a weather friendly chapel at the Sudan Cemetery. The purpose of this chapel is not to replace a church, but to give anyone who needs it, a place to have any part or all of a service for their loved one at the cemetery.
As a group we recognized the fact that the weather where we live can be very difficult all times of year between wind, heat, and cold on those that attend at the cemetery. Further, the tent and chairs that are provided at internment services are sometimes not very successful in keeping our windy, cold days bearable they also can cost near and additional $1,000 or more of the burial package that a family has to pay.
The use of the Sudan Cemetery Chapel will be no cost to the family and will be equipped with seating and heated and cooled. This will be especially helpful for our senior citizens and handicapped folks. The group approached the city with the heart to get a design and raise the funds to have a nice facility at the cemetery for families to be able to use during any kind of weather.
The group planned and approached the city with the idea of making this a gift to the city as a permanent addition to the cemetery. The city leaders approved the action and sent the group back to work. In 2022, the group has conducted a gun raffle, ½ beef raffle, and a community wide meal. The Chapel fund has raised over $25,000 toward the project thru the end of December 2022.
The outer part of the chapel will be a metal building with barn doors on the side that can be opened to provide more room, or ventilation. The front of the building with have two windows and a front door and the back will have two windows and a service door.
Inside will be smaller ribbed white metal and the facility will have electrical outlets to provide music as well as seating over 100. Bailey Co Electric is providing our wiring to building. On top of the building, will be a Cupola and will match the building. Sidewalks will surround the building and in front will house a walkway with personalized memorial bricks.
The bricks will be laser engraved with the name of a loved one, family, a business. Information on how to purchase bricks will be published very soon. Handicapped parking will be provided as well as additional parking north of the cemetery.
The chapel will be a beautiful asset to our cemetery, as it will connect the old cemetery with the new one. Currently, the city has engaged construction, and now has the 30X50 foundation is in place and will begin framework next
We have three ways you can help make our vision of a beautiful chapel a reality in a faster time. · Donations – this can be memorial to honor a loved one that will be accepted at city hall. If you would like to donate to the project, please contact Sudan City Hall, and at First United Bank.
· If you would like to have a monthly donation added to your water bill, this can be any amount you choose from $1 on up to whatever you feel like you can afford. This will really be an appreciated and helpful way to help us. In order to do this, you need to call City Hall – (806) 227-2102, & Michelle or Kristy can help you with this. This is something that has to be done with your permission, it is not an add on the city is requiring you to do.
· Buy a brick for our walkway to honor your loved one or recognize a business. These will be sold in two sizes – a 4 X 8 with 3 lines of text with 20 characters of text. Also, an 8 X 8 with 6 lines of text with 20 characters per line. This one would be perfect to put several family members names on. We will be giving additional information on this at a later date.
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that has donated to us or has contributed to our various fundraisers to date, and encourage you to support the final push to help us complete the cemetery chapel.
