Stevy Smith wins Week 1 of Football Contest

The Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest is back with our first week of games in the books. This weeks first-place winner was Stevy Smith, who finished with a mark of 16-4.

We had four contestants tie for second place with a mark of 15-5, including, Alma Castillo, Ivan Estrada, Amanda Gonzales and Juan Garza.

The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of Grambling vs Louisiana, which was 50 points. Taking second place by way of tiebreaker was Garza, who guessed 49 points. Taking third place, also by way of tie- breaker, was Gonzales, who guessed 42 points, beating out Estrada’s guess of 60 points and Alma Castillo’s guess of 33 points.

In the High School Ranks, Littlefield protected their home field against Lamesa, blasting the Golden Tornadoes, 55-27. Olton held on against Sudan, 22-15, at home, while Springlake-Earth picked up a big road victory over the Whitharral Panthers on the road, 36-34.

KPA took down Amherst, 38-33, while Anton fell to Christ the King on Thursday, 37-31. Dalhart took down Levelland, 55-27, while Shallowater edged out Monahans, 17-14, and Muleshoe throttled Brownfield, 63- 6. Bushland Handled Borger, 61-3, while Slaton took down Friona, 42-36.

In the college ranks, Georgia handled Clemson 34-3, while Vanderbilt upset Virginia Tech in overtime, 34-27. The Miami Hurricanes went into the Swap and took down the Gators, 41-17, while UTSA defeated Kennesaw State, 28-16.

On Sunday, USC pulled off an upset over LSU, 27-20, while Appalachian State took down East Tennessee State, 38-10. Northwestern defeated Miami Ohio, 136, while Sam Houston State won on the road against Rice, 34-14, and UCLA took down Hawai’i 1613. Texas Tech survived an upset at home in overtime against Abilene Christian University, 5251.

Those, who finished 14-6 this week were, Martin Duran, Nancy Smith, Lonnie Neinast, Richard Orozco, Robin Elliott, Ronnie Martin and Teresa Dabrowski, while 13-7 finishers this week were Brenda Herrell, James Hood, Jan Smith, JC Orozco, JR Herrell, Terrill Moorhead and Tommy Cloninger.

Contestants, who finished 12 8 were Jazmine Davis, Dewayne Hayes, Johnny Rosemond, Larry Ashley, Martin Duran Jr. and Micky Orozco. Those who finished 11-9 this week were David Neinast, Donna Neinast, Ed Dabrowski, Mark Grace and Sam Castillo. Rounding out the field this week was Maria Pinon, who finished 8-12.
