Parishioners of St. Michael Catholic Church in Levelland are making final preparations over the next week for the 39th Annual Sausage Lovers Festival Sunday, Feb. 4 in the Parish Hall at 318 E. Washington St.
Teams of volunteers will be preparing the fixings for a homemade German-style sausage dinner that will be served from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. that day. The menu for the meal includes homemade Germanstyle link sausage, German potato salad, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, green beans, fresh homemade rolls and dessert. The price of the meal is $15 per plate for dine-in or carry-out.
Parishioners are planning to prepare 3,000 lbs. of German-style link sausage that will also be sold in bulk for $8 per pound beginning Saturday, Feb. 3 and during the festival. A limited amount of breakfast and jalepeño sausage will be prepared and available for sale.
Eddie Trevino, chairman of this year’s event, said the festival has evolved from a church festival to a favorite community event.
“We want to thank everyone who has supported and attended this amazing event for the past 38 years,” said Trevino. “As each year passes, we all look forward to St. Michael’s Sausage Festival. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy a wonderful meal and fellowship with our community,” he says.
The sausage is prepared using a 100-year-old recipe that belongs to the Kahlich family of Smyer. For more than 20 years, the late Albert Kahlich prepared the seasoning ingredients from his family’s recipe. It has been passed down to his son, Greg, who continues the tradition that has made the sausage prepared by St. Michael parishioners a favorite.
In addition to the dinner, musical entertainment will be provided from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Live and silent auctions will be held beginning at 1 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Fresh baked goods will be available for purchase.
At the conclusion of the festival, a drawing will be held for a 2023 Ford F150 STX 4x4 Supercrew truck from Smith Auto Family in Levelland. Tickets for the drawing can be obtained from parishioners or from the Parish Office at 319 E. Washington St. and will also be available the day of the festival.
