The Springlake High School class of 1962 held its 60th class reunion on Thursday Aug. 11 and Friday Aug. 12, 2022 at the Embassy Suites in Lubbock.
The classes visited with each other for a long time. Ronnie Dent, senior class president of 1962, was the emcee for the night. Ross Morris and Shelby Bozeman did a stand up routine. Bozeman told the group if they did not share something about themselves, he would make it up.
“[Bozeman] demonstrated what he might make up, about brothels and strip joints and bars and pole dancing and all that stuff,” Gaye Scarborough, class of 1962, said. “Everybody talked and told what they had done for the last 60 years. They talked about their families and stuff. He got us all talking and laughing and we just had a great evening carrying on with each other.”
The Embassy provided a Mexican buffet for the reunion. Some people went home and some stayed at the hotel, but they all gathered at the Embassy the next morning for breakfast.
The class invited members of the 1961 and 1963 classes. There were also members of the 1959, 1960 and 1965 class in attendance as well. There were a total of 40 people who attended the class reunion including spouses. Of those, only 10 were from the 1962 class.
“We all knew each other,” Scarborough said. “In a small school, we had 32 in our class all together – 20 boys and 12 girls – and we were in FHA together and Home Ec and sports, band, and all the classes but especially the ones below us and above us. If we could get their phone numbers or addresses or whatever, we invited them and they do the same for us.”
The members of the 1962 reunion that were in attendance were Shelby Bozeman, Ronnie Dent, Norma Kincer, Don Layman, Joan Lemons, Ross Morris, Monaco Rodriquez, Gaye Scarborough, Jackie Scheller and Claburn Stewart. Of the 10, eight of which started school at Springlake in the first grade.
The members of the 1961 class in attendance were Johnny and Linda Collins, Linda Johnson, A. M. “Butch” McGowen and Margaret Sprinkle. The members of the 1963 class were Bill Chaney, Boyd Clayton, Vic Coker, Janet Cooper, Evelyn McAnelly and Ilene Stewart. The members of the 1965 class were Mary Chaney, Beth Moudy and Beverly Walden.
