Sisters of Hope and Grace was something that Lisa Torres and Eleanor Martinez started last year.
“We started this last year, because there isn’t much here for the elderly to do in our community,” she said. “We started out at my house and we did three meals out of my house and we decided that we wanted to go bigger. I spoke with Lamb County Judge James DeLoach and we got the building to do a Thanksgiving meal. That was a blast.”
She added, “I went and talked with Judge DeLoach and told him my plan and vision and this is what I want this to be. Judge DeLoach was all for it, so now he lets me use the building quarterly, as long as I don’t profit from this, which I don’t. This is all done through donations and out of pocket.”
Torres and Martinez got together and they started a group called “ Sisters of Hope and Grace”.
“That was our motive to start the year off; hope to make our vision grow, hope that it is successful, hope that we have the turnouts, grace, because with the grace of God it’s going to get bigger and better. My goal is to one day be able to do this weekly,” she explained.
Torres stated that this is all donation based and they do not profit off of these meals.
“I’m very blessed that Judge DeLoach helps us and that businesses and people in our community reach out and help,” she explained. “This is something I plan to continue doing every quarter, every three months. Our next one will be in September and our last one for the year will be in December.”
Torres stated that for this meal they received donations from Premier Chevrolet in Littlefield, First Bank and Trust, Lowe’s Food King, Diana from Loco’s, Savannahs, Shawna Hastings from Hillcrest, and then just donations from people in our community.
“It’s a blessing that we have a lot of businesses that are willing to help us and be part of our vision,” she said. “Without them this wouldn’t be possible.”
Torres said that something different for this meal was that she wanted to get the football team involved.
“I had reached out to Superintendent Mitch McNeese a few months ago, about involving the football team in our next meal,” she said. “I told him, we all love football, but what is your opinion if we involve the football team in our next meal, that way our community can see that our boys are about more than just football. They’re about giving back to our community and giving back to our elderly. He thought it was a great idea.”
She added, “I just want the community to know that our boys are more than just football. Coach Bryant already stated that the team will help out again with our next meal in September, which will be a brunch.
At this meal, the football coaches cooked over 300 burgers and the football players assembled the burgers, cut and bagged up watermelon and set up tables and chairs, as well as interacted with the elderly in attendance.
