The final assembly of Amherst ISD was held to reward students for their accomplishments in academic competition in Junior High and High School on Monday, May 13, 2024.
The program was opened with remarks by school principal, Jose Gonzales, who commended the staff and students on the diligence and hard work they had contributed to the success of this school term.
The awards program began with a presentation of various certificates presented to eighth graders who received Achievement awards in different areas of curriculum.
Shonda Cannon, High School English teacher, presented awards to the students who excelled in English studies. For English IDeserie Rodriguez, English II- Oscar Contreras, English III- Cesar Gaytan, and English IV-Maricella Gonzalez.
Ms. Stacy Young, Math and Reading teacher, presented academic awards in Math and Reading to Junior High Students: Kenzley Mata, Jasmine Drake, Fabian Reyes and Dylan Cuevanos and in Reading Harper Gonzalez. Yerdy Bueno was recognized for her achievement in Art.
Thomas Christison, the Junior High School Math and Technology teacher, awarded certificates to Jasmine Drake- Science, Kenzley Mata- Social Studies, Iris Villa-Social Studies, and Danya Muniz-9th grade World Geography.
Deena Gibson, Junior High English teacher, presented award certificates in Reading and ELA to Nathalie Medrano and Ulysis Medrano; Mireya Muniz and James Lockridge; Mychaela Rangel, Joshua Ramirez, and Jesus Scarpett.
Cortney Tanner, teacher of Ag Science, awarded certificates to Jesus Medrano, Memo Pacheco, Joel Garcia, Ivan Lopez, and Maricella Gonzalez.
Cheryl Butler, Computer Science/ Technology teacher, awarded certificates to James Lockridge, Deserie Rodriguez, Kevin Garcia, and Dennys Reyes.
Maria Gonzales, teacher of Junior High and High School Mathematics, awarded Certificates to Nathalie Medrano and Mireya Muniz-8th grade; Memo Pacheco and Deserie Rodriguez-Algebra I; Oscar Contreras and Joel Garcia-Geometry; Limo Contreras and Kevin Garcia-Algebra II; and Maricella Gonzalez and Dennys Reyes- Ag Mathematics.
Thomas Light, Coach/ Economics/ Government, awarded certificates to Mireya Muniz-8th grade; Joel Garcia, and Sophia Avila-US History; Kevin Garcia-World History; Dennys Reyes-Government; and Yadira Contreras-Economics.
Karen Storie, Junior High and High School Science teacher, presented awards certificates to Fabian Reyes-7th grade, James Lockridge-8th grade; in High School, Deserie Rodriguez-Biology; Sophia Avila-Chemistry; America Pacheco-Environmental Systems; and Yadira Contreras-Forensics.
Stephanie Mallory, presented Cheer Participation certificates to Nathalie Medrano, Corina Mata, Mady Flores, Iris Villa, Jasmine Drake, Kenzley Mata, and Harper Gonzales.
Junior High Girls Athletics participation awards were presented by Coach Daniel Hinojosa to Sarahi Cedillo, Jasmine Drake, Harper Gonzalez, Jasmine Salas, Kenzley Mata, Nathalia Medrano, Mireya Muniz, Mychaela Rangel, Yiedy Bueno, Corina Mata Ruby Martel, Iris Villa, Mady Flores, Aviana Silvas, and Dani Haines.
Coach Hinojosa also presented participation awards in Junior High school boys athletics to Cristian Mata, James Lockridge, Jesus Medrano, Jeremiah Scott, Uriah Clark, Angel Contreras, Fabian Reyes, Matthew Scott, Ulysis Medrano, Dakarai Lee, Dylan Luevanos, and Joshua Ramirez.
UIL Awards for High School students were presented to Maricella Gonzalez, Yodira Contreras, Joel Garcia, Dennys Reyes, America Pacheco, not present were Yahur Garcia, Aiden Rodriguez, and Deserie Rodriguez.
UIL Awards for Junior High School students were presented to Kenzley Mata, Fabian Reyes, Uriah Clark, and James Lockridge.
High School AB Honor Roll students recognized were Deserie Rodriquez, Jayson Lee, Jasmin Muniz, Maricella Gonzalez, Hector Perez, and Dennys Reyes.
The Junior High AB Honor Roll student was Jasmine Drake.
Mr. Gonzales then announced the presentation of scholarships to graduating seniors.
The Amherst Bulldog Booster Club awarded a $500.00 scholarship to Hector Perez and to Dennys Reyes.
The Amherst Chamber of Commerce awarded a $500.00 scholarship to Dennys Reyes and Maricella Gonzalez Desi Vargas of the First Federal Bank of Littlefield presented the first ever Yvonne Maxfield scholarship in the amount of $1,000.00 to Oscar Medrano.
The South Plains College scholarships were awarded to Valedictorian, Dennys Reyes, and Salutatorian, Maricella Gonzalez.
The Awards program concluded with the traditional advancement of the classes, and the singing of the school song followed by the Senior Walk through the school for the last time.
