Ronnie Martin announces 100th Wildcat football game

Ronnie Martin, the Voice of the Wildcats announced his 100 th football game.

Martin was born and raised in Littlefield and graduated from Littlefield High School in the Class of 1979. After high school Martin joined the military, becoming a member of the United States Air Force.

During his time at Littlefield Martin was a member of the Wildcat football and track teams. He played tight end and cornerback for the football team.

Martin explained that he would have had his 100 th game last season, but Littlefield had to cancel their game with Big Spring.

Martin talked about how he became the Voice of the Wildcats, saying, “Billy Tom Grant, who was the Voice of the Wildcats for 18 years – I told him when he got ready to retire to holler at me because I would like to do it when he was done. He always told Coach Boomer he would step down when he did. He came to me and said this gig is up. Then I got nervous, but he came up to the press box and showed me what to do and the rest is history.”

This will be Martin’s 21 st year announcing for the Wildcats.

Martin talked about what it means to him to have played here and to be able to now announce for the kids who are playing now, saying, “I haven’t been on the field in over 40 years, but on Friday night’s we stand up in the booth and we still get chills. The band is playing and it is a lot of fun. It’s the best seat in the house.

Martin said that the thing he enjoys most about announcing the games is that he has the best seat in the house.

“You also get to interact with a lot of the coaches and meet some other great people,” he said. “You just get to see some really great football.”

Martin reminisced about his favorite memory, while announcing for the Wildcats, saying, “The memory that comes to mind is when Coach Huseman was coaching and I can’t remember what year it was but it was here at Wildcat stadium and we had to beat Muleshoe by 12, I believe, to get into the play-offs. We beat them by more than that and it was like we just won the state championship. That is one of my favorite memories.”

He added, “Another fun memory was getting to announce my son when he played.”

Martin said that his wife, Renee, is up in the booth with him on Friday nights and she helps with the scoreboard part and the announcements and pictures.

They have a son who lives in Seattle and two granddaughters, 11 and 6-years old.

Martin said that he hopes to continue to be the voice of the Wildcats as long as he can.

“I’ve worked every sport except for cross country,” he said. I announce for baseball, I run the clock for basketball and I used to do volleyball and track.”

He added, “It’s been a great run and I’ve had a lot of fun being the voice of the Wildcats and appreciate them giving me the opportunity.”
