We are through Week nine of the Lamb County Leader-New’s annual football contest, leaving just three weeks left in the contest.
This week, Richard Orozco and Ed Dabrowski tied for first place both finishing 15-5. The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the Chargers and Chiefs, which was 48 points. Richard Orozco nailed the tie-breaker right on the button with a guess of 48 points, while Ed Dabrowski took second place with a guess of 47 points.
We had a tie for third place with both Johnny Rosemond and Larry Ashley finishing 14-6 this week. However, Ashley edged out Rosemond for the third place price by way of tie-breaker with a guess of 47 points, while Rosemond guessed 45 points.
In the high school ranks, Littlefield suffered their first district loss on the road on Friday, falling to Abernathy, 48-0. Olton also suffered their first loss of district play on the road, falling to New Deal, 56-21, while Springlake-Earth took down Petersburg, 7428, and Amherst defeated Hart, 6932.
Ropes edged out Seagraves at home, 17-14, while Idalou won a low scoring game against Roosevelt, 14-0, and Tascosa cruised past Caprock, 63- 24. Slaton held on against Lamesa, 2014, while Bushland blasted Shallowater, 35-3.
In the college ranks, Florida State took down Duke, 38-20, while Ole Miss rallied past Auburn, 2821, and Air Force defeated Navy, 17-6. Miami took down Clemson, 28-20, while Kansas State throttled TCU, 41-3.
In the NFL, The Eagles flew past the Dolphins, 31-17, while the Ravens handled the Lions, 38-6, and the Patriots edged out the Bills, 29-25. The Giants took down the Commanders 14-7, while the Browns snuck by the Colts, 39-38.
Those who finished 13-7 this week were Ronnie Martin, Brenda Herrell, JC Orozco, Donna Neinast, Oscar Sanchez and Mark Grace, while those who finished 12-8 this week were Tommy Cloninger, David Neinast, Ivan Estrada, Stevy Smith, Maria Pinon, JR Herrell, Terrill Moorhead, Jan Smith and James Hood.
Martin Duran, Jonathan Magallanes, Lonnie Neinast, Charlie Smith and Alma Castillo each finished 11-9 this week, while Dewayne Hayes, Juan Garza and Thomas Blackstone each finished 10-10. Sam Castillo, Robin Elliott and Teresa Dabrowski each finished 9-11 this week, while Jimmy Garcia finished 7-13.
In the overall standings, Duran still remains in first place with 129 points, but the lead has shrunk to two points, as Rosemond and Martin are both closing in on him, each with 127 points in second place. Richard Orozco, Brenda Herrell and Cloninger are tied for third with 126 points, while JC Orozco is in fourth with 124 points and David Neinast and Magallanes are tied for fifth with 123 points.
Lonnie Neinast is in sixth place with 121 points, while Donna Neinast, Estrada and Jan Smith are tied for seventh with 119 points, and Sanchez and Hayes are tied for eighth with 116 points. Stevy Smith, Charlie Smith, Alma Castillo and Sam Castillo are tied for ninth with 115 points, while Ashley rounds out the top 10 with 114 points.
