National Ranching Heritage Center to Host 47th Annual Candlelight at the Ranch

Guests can experience frontier-era Christmas traditions Dec. 12–13.

The National Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech University will host the 47th Annual Candlelight at the Ranch on Dec. 12–13, transforming its 19-acre historic park into an authentic Old West Christmas illuminated by more than 5,000 luminaries. The free event, supported by volunteers and sponsors, offers visitors live music, refreshments and a nostalgic look at frontier holiday traditions.

Why This Matters: Cultural Preservation:

The event authentically recreates 19th-century ranch life, helping preserve and share Texas’s ranching heritage with new generations.

Community Engagement:

With over 200 volunteers and local partnerships, Candlelight at the Ranch strengthens community ties and celebrates regional traditions.

Educational Impact:

Through hands-on experiences and historical interpretation, the National Ranching Heritage Center promotes understanding of early ranching history and the evolution of rural life. The National Ranching Heritage Center (NRHC) at Texas Tech University will once again bring the spirit of the Old West to life during the 47th Annual Candlelight at the Ranch.

More than 5,000 luminaries, primarily lanterns, fireplaces and campfires, will light the 19-acre historic park as visitors experience authentic holiday scenes.

“Pioneer ranches were without electricity, so we strive to recreate what each of our historic structures would have looked like at Christmas in its own time,” said Julie Hodges, NRHC Helen DeVitt Jones Endowed Director of Education. “Authenticity is key, as many of the 55 buildings are more than a century old.”

Over 200 community volunteers, many dressed in period attire, will help bring the frontier Christmas to life. Guests can enjoy refreshments in the decorated 1908 Four Sixes Barn and enjoy live Texas swing music from Brazos West.

Santa Claus will greet visitors in the Pitchfork Pavilion until 9 p.m. each night. The beloved holiday tradition is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 12–13 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Admission is free with a suggested $10 family donation.

VIP Experience passes for premium parking and early entry are on sale. A free shuttle service will be available from the University Medical Center parking lot at Fourth Street and Indiana Avenue, with Citibus providing continuous service to and from the NRHC entrance. A parking map and event details can be seen on the event page.

The 47th Annual Candlelight at the Ranch is made possible in part by Acme Electric Company and The CH Foundation.
