Week two of the Lamb County Leader-New’s annual football contest is in the books and saw some thrillers in the high school rankings as well as some upsets in the college rankings.
Martin Duran is the winner of the week two football contest finishing with a mark of 18-2, following by Ronnie Martin, who finished in second place this week with a tally of 16-4.
We had seven people tie for third with a mark of 15-5, forcing us to go to the tie-breaker for third place, which was the combined score of Texas State vs Baylor, which was 73 points. Donna Neinast took third place, getting the closest to the score with a guess of 61 points. She edged out David Neinast’s guess of 59 points, Brenda Herrell’s guess of 56 points, Tommy Cloninger’s guess off 52 points, Jonathan Magallanes’ guess of 48 points, Johnny Rosemond’s guess of 45 points and Dewayne Hayes’ guess of 44 points.
In the high school ranks, Littlefield held on in their homeopener against Denver City to earn their first win of the season, 32-28, while Sudan also picked up their first win of the season at home, edging out Tahoka, 18-14. The Amherst Bulldogs shutout Groom, 49-0, while Olton Shutout Dimmitt at home, 43- 0, and Springlake-Earth picked up a big win over Valley, 46-21.
White Deer took down Anton, 31-22, while Abernathy blasted Slaton, 46- 15, and Muleshoe handled business against Lamesa, 48- 6. Hawley clipped the Roosevelt Eagles, 14-6.
In the college ranks, Colorado pulled off a big upset in their opener against TCU, 45-42, while Penn State handled business against West Virginia, taking the contest, 38-15. UCLA came out on top against Coastal Carolina, 2713, and North Carolina took down South Carolina, 31-17.
Wyoming won a stunner over Texas Tech in double overtime, 3533, and Washington State took it to Colorado State, 50-24. USE blasted Nevada, 66-14, and Houston snuck by UTSA, 17-14. Virginia Tech defeated Old Dominion, 36-17, and on Sunday, Florida State upset LSU, 45-24.
The rest of the field’s individual scores are as follows: Those who finished 14-6 this week were, Richard Orozco, JC Orozco, Juan Garza, Sandra Williams, Ed Dabrowski, Sam Castillo, Alma Castillo, Maria Pinon and Teresa Dabrowski. 13-7 finishers this week were Jan Smith, Mark Grace, Ivan Estrada, Thomas Blackstone and JR Herrell, while Larry Ashley, Oscar Sanchez, Charlie Smith, Terrill Moorhead and Stevey Smith each finished 128 this week.
11-9 finishers were Jimmy Garcia, Lonnie Neinast and Bill Albus, while Sam Quilimaco finished 1010 and Robin Elliott finished 8-12 this week.
In the overall standings, Brenda Herrell sits atop the field with 29 points, while there is a four-way tie for second place with 27 points between Martin, Rosemond, David Neinast and Donna Neinast. In third place with 26 points, are Magallanes, Grace, Richard Orozco, JC Orozco and Ashley, while Duran, Cloninger, Garza and Estrada are tied for fourth place with 25 points.
Williams and Jan Smith are in fifth with 24 points, while Hayes, Ed Dabrowski, Sam Castillo, Alma Castillo and Blackstone are tied for sixth with 23 points each. Pinon, Sanchez, Charlie Smith, Garcia and Lonnie Neinast are tied for seventh with 22 points each, while JR Herrell, Moorhead and Albus are tied for eighth with 21 points.
Stevy Smith is in ninth with 20 points and Teresa Dabrowski rounds out the 10 top in the overall standings with 19 points.
