Littlefield EMS Paramedic On May 4th Students enrolled in the EMT- Basic class at Littlefield High School participated in an extrication drill that was coordinated by Littlefield EMS. This practice drill also involved the Littlefield Fire Department, Lamb Healthcare Center, Littlefield Police Dept. Dispatch and All Ways Towing.
Students were able to practice how to properly assess and treat a patient during a trauma related scenario. They also learned how to work with other resources to safely extricate patients from a vehicle. Three students enrolled in the LISD Patient Care Technician program were a big help by volunteering to be trauma patients for this event.
Practice drills are essential in the learning process because there is a gap between what students learn in a classroom setting and what really happens on scenes. These drills help to close that gap and allow students to use the knowledge they have gained and put into practice the skills they have learned during the EMT program.
Students were also able to hear from seasoned LEMS personnel, Firefighters and All Ways Towing staff who shared their knowledge from years of working accident scenes.
