Lfd. set to open season on the road against Dimmitt

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team is set to get the 2021 season underway on the road on Friday as they travel to Dimmitt to take on the Bobcats.

Head Coach Jimmy Thomas talked about what he saw from their two scrimmages, saying, “I think we’ve gotten a little better. We did some good things in both scrimmages, but I think we’ve gotten better from one scrimmage to the other. Offensively, we ran the ball better in the first scrimmage than we did the second scrimmage and we threw and caught the ball better in the second scrimmage than we did the first scrimmage.”

He added, “We’re just worried about us and are just trying to get better everyday. One thing I was very pleased with is that our kids came out and played their tails off. You walked away from both scrimmages and you weren’t thinking that we were inferior physically, and that was our whole goal. We wanted to come out and play hard and play fast and I think we did that in both scrimmages.”

The Wildcats are set to take on the Bobcats on Friday; they took last year’s contest over Dimmitt, 56-0. They will be looking to replicate that success on Friday.

“They’re going to give us a lot of pressure,” Coach Thomas stated. “They’ve shown us two different looks; a multiple 3-3 stack with a lot of blitzing and tight linebackers. They try to keep those defensive linemen off of their backers and so we’re going to have to do a good job with that. They’ve also shown us a 3-4 with two high safeties. We’re going to have to handle a little pressure up front, but if we can do that I think it can be a good night. We’re excited about Friday.”

He added, “They haven’t scored a lot, but they have moved the ball quite a bit. There quarterback Ontiveros is about 6’2” 220 lbs and breaks a lot of tackles and can run a little bit, so we’re going to have to be able to tackle him. He is not going to be an easy out in one-on-one’s. Their running back is a smaller guy, but he runs really hard and physical. They’ve moved the ball at times, but just haven’t scored a lot. I think if we can keep those two guys in check and make sure we don’t give up the big play, I think we will be fine.”

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m. at Bobcat Stadium in Dimmitt.
