Lfd. Lady Cats hold off Hereford, 47-42, for victory

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team picked up a victory on Tuesday at home over the Hereford Lady Whitefaces, 4742.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 2-3 overall on the season.

Senior, Madison McNeese, picked up a steal and took it the other way for a two-on-one break, as she got it to junior, Kyndal Edgemon, for a lay-up to finish off the play, but Hereford quickly answered, as Kyndal Blair dropped in a lay-up to tie the game, 2-2, with 6:45 remaining in the opening quarter. Junior, Kennadi Hanlin, and McNeese scored back-to-back lay-ups off of steals to put the Lady Cats in front, 6-2, and with 4:09 to play in the first quarter, Hanlin grabbed another steal, getting out on the break, she finished off the play with a second chance bucket to extend their lead to, 8-2.

With just under four minutes remaining in the quarter, Aubrey Devin drew a blocking foul on Hanlin, sending her to the line for free throws. She connected on both shots to trim the lead to four points, 8-4, but Maerysa Saenz answered on the other end with a three from the right wing, off of the assist from Edgemon, pushing the lead back out to, 11-4.

Sam Grajeda picked up a steal from McNeese and got it ahead to Arissa Alaniz on the break for a lay-up to trim the lead to, 11-6. With under one minute to play in the quarter, Edgemon dropped in a hook shot in the lane off the glass to make it a seven-point Lady Cat lead, 13-6. However, with time winding down in the quarter, Azalea Alaniz was fouled on an attempt by Amiah Elizondo; she converted both shots at the line to make the score, 13-8, as the first quarter came to a close.

Lynzee Carbajal opened the second frame with a lay-up for Hereford to cut the lead to, 13-10, but Hanlin responded on the other end with a jumper from the left elbow, off of the assist from Edgemon, pushing their lead back out to, 15-10. Devin dropped in a lay-up for Hereford, but on the other end, Hanlin was fouled on a shot attempt by Arissa Alaniz with 3:07 to play in the first half. She sank both shots at the line and on their next possession, Jasmine Barrios dropped in a put-back off of the miss from Hanlin to stretch their lead to, 19-12, with just over two minutes left to play in the first half.

Sarahi Sanchez drained a three from the left wing for Hereford, but with 1:20 remaining in the half, Hanlin was fouled on an attempt by Sanchez earning a trip to the line. She converted both free throws to extend the Littlefield lead to, 21-14. Grajeda scored a put-back, but with under one minute to play in the half, Bri Valdez answered with a three from the left corner off of the assist from Edgemon, making the score, 24-16.

With time winding down in the half, Sanchez buried a three from the left elbow for Hereford to cut the lead to, 24-19, going into the locker room at halftime.

Devin took a charge on Edgemon to open the second half, but after regaining possession, McNeese used a spin move to get to the basket for a lay-up on the right side, stretching the lead back out to, 26-19. With 5:22 to play in the third, Devin was fouled on an attempt by Elizondo; she sank both free throws to trim the lead to five points, 26-21.

McNeese split a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Blair and on the next play, Saenz took a charge on Blair to regain possession for the Lady Cats. Hereford took a time out with 4:32 remaining in the quarter, and out of the break, Carbajal dropped in a lay-up on the right side to cut the lead to four points, 27-23.

With 3:09 to play in the quarter, Blair dropped in a lay-up to make it a one-possession game for Hereford and a few moments later, Arissa Alaniz picked up a steal from Arianna Cruz and dropped it in for a lay-up to tie the game, 27-27. With under one minute remaining in the quarter, Edgemon drove to the basket strong for a lay-up and with time winding down in the quarter, Cruz sent a long pass down court that found Edgemon, who finished off the play with a layup to end the third quarter with the Lady Cats in front, 31-27.

McNeese was fouled on the floor by Aubriana Sturgeon sending her to the line for a onein- one opportunity. She sank both free throws to make it a sixpoint game, 33-27, but Hereford responded with a floater from the left elbow from Azalea Alaniz with 7:17 to play in the game.

McNeese was again fouled on the floor by Sturgeon ans sank both free throws to extend the lead to, 35-29, with 6:42 remaining and two plays later, Elizondo split a pair of free throws after being fouled on a rebound by Grajeda, making the score, 36-29.

Devin dropped in a lay-up off of the outlet pass from Grajeda and Littlefield took a time out to prevent a turnover with 5:20 remaining in the contest. Out of the break, McNeese was fouled on the floor by Azalea Alaniz; she split the free throws and two plays later Carbajal was fouled on an attempt by Cruz. She split the free throws to make it a fivepoint game, 37-32, with 3:42 remaining in the contest.

Arissa Alaniz picked up a steal from Hanlin and took it the other way for a fast-break lay-up, but on the next play, Saenz was fouled on the floor by Grajeda and sank one-of-two shots at the line to make it a four-point game, 38-34. Blair dropped in a lay- up for Hereford, but Edgemon knocked down a short jumper from the left side and McNeese was fouled on the next play by Blair with 2:22 remaining. She split the free throws to make the score, 41- 36, as Littlefield took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Devin buried a three from the right wing to make it a one- possession game, 41-39. After a time out, Cruz was fouled by Arissa Alaniz and split the free throws, but with under one minute remaining, Arissa Alaniz used a fake pass to move the defender as she dropped in a floater from the left side, drawing an and-one foul on McNeese. She could not convert the free throw leaving the score, 42-41, with under one minute to play.

McNeese went three-for-four from the line in the final minute of play and Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from Saenz, as Littlefield topped Hereford, 47-42.

The Lady Cats were led in scoring by McNeese and Edgemon, who each poured in 14 points. Hanlin tallied eight points, while Saenz chipped in four points, Valdez netted three points, Barrios tallied two points and Elizondo and Cruz each finished with one point.

The Lady Cats were at the New Home Tournament this weekend. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game against Floydada.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.
