The February meeting of the Lamb County Retired School Personnel Association will be held on Tuesday, February 3, 2056 in the Fellowship Center of the Littlefield Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. The program will be given by Joel Rogers, Superintendent of the Amherst Independent School District.
Members are reminded that Volunteer Hours need to be turned in by mid-February. If you have not already turned in your tally sheet or the total number of hours, please bring that information to this meeting. If you cannot come to the meeting, please let Cindie Walker know the information. The total number of volunteer hours our Association has performed this year will be turned into the Region and will then be forwarded to State.
In March we will visit the second grade classroom in Amherst Elementary School and deliver books to the students. We may also deliver books to the Pre-Kindergarten classroom. The children can keep the books at school or they can take them home.
Did you know that, based on TRTA calculations, the average Teacher Retirement System member who retired in 2020 or earlier remains more than 30% behind inflation based on the Consumer Price Index? The State contributes 8.25% of payroll into TRS. The combined employer contribution rate from the state and local districts is just 9.37%. Public educators in most districts in Texas do not participate in Social Security because their employers do not pay into Social Security.
Did you know that it was one year ago when the U.S. Congress passed H.R. 82, repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO)—two long-standing Social Security provisions that unfairly reduced benefits for retired educators and public across the nation? Thousands of retired teachers, school employees, and other public workers were affected. Organizations like TRTA worked tirelessly for years to right this wrong and ensure that retirees receive the full benefits they earned through a lifetime of work.
Invite a friend, reach out to a former colleague, encourage someone new to get involved. Help us continue building a strong, effective, and powerful TRTA for years to come.
We hope to see you on February 3.
