Lady Cats pick up district win over Tulia, 3-0

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team picked up their first district win of the season on Saturday, sweeping the Tulia Lady Hornettes on the road, 3-0; 25-21, 25-22 and 27-25.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 16-11 overall, 1-2 in district play.

The Lady Cats clung to a onepoint lead in the first set, before Nevaeh Lopez delivered a block for a kill to make the score, 18-16. Cali Saldana followed it up with a kill of her own, but Tulia answered, sending a kill off of Bryndle Ray to trim the lead to, 19-17. Lopez sent a hit into the net, but Kloe Chasco had a kill attempt land out of bounds on the sideline to make the score, 20-18.

Kaleigh Franco was called for a double-hit, and Madi Williams served up an ace inside the back boundary line to push their lead to, 22-18, as Tulia took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Williams’ serve sailed out of bounds, but she would respond on the next play with a tip that was hit out of bounds by Franco, pushing the lead to, 23-19.

Tulia responded with a kill and Cali Saldana sent a hit out of bounds on the following play, cutting the lead to, 23-21, before Anna Solomon was called for a doublehit, making the score, 24-21. Alyssa Torres would close out the first set with an ace off of Abrie Gomez, as Littlefield took the set, 25-21.

In set two, Littlefield jumped out to a, 2-0, lead after back-to-back miscues by Tulia, but it was shortlived, as Maggie McNeese sent a kill out of bounds and Gomez followed it up with a kill for Tulia to tie the set, 2-2. Chasco served up an ace off of Tailyn Gomez, before sending her next serve short of the net, making the score, 3-3.

Cali Saldana had a hit blocked by Abrie Gomez and the secondchance hit, was hit into the net by Tailyn Gomez, putting Tulia in front, 3-4. Williams delivered a kill off of Jenna Van Pelt to tie the set, 4-4, and Franco sent a hit into the net on the next play for Tulia, putting the Lady Cats back in front, 5-4.

A serve from Gabby Medina went un-returned by Tulia, but Cobi Saldana sent a hit into the net on the next play, making the score, 6-5. Audrey Abeyta served up an ace off of Myli Hernandez to tie the set, 6-6, but Littlefield would respond, as Hernandez delivered a kill in front of the block attempt by Abrie Gomez, putting Littlefield back in front, 7-6.

Aubrii Williams sent a hit into the net, but a tip by Ray on the next play landed out of bounds on the sideline, making the score, 8-7. Franco sent a hit into the net for Tulia and the Lady Hornettes were called for being on the net on the next play, pushing the lead to, 10-7. Abrie Gomez delivered a kill off of Torres and Franco served up an ace off of Torres to cut the lead to, 10-9, before a tip by Madi Williams was hit under the net by Abrie Gomez on a dig attempt, making the score, 11-9.

Tulia was called for four hits, as they took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Cobi Saldana sent a serve short of the net, and McNeese followed it up with a kill that sailed out of bounds, making the score, 12-11. They would bounce back, as a tip from Cali Saldana was tipped out of bounds by Jazlynn Del toro, stretching the lead to, 13-11.

Chasco sent a hit into the net, but Tulia would answer on the next play, as Hernandez tipped a ball out of bounds for Littlefield, making the score, 14-12. The teams went back-and-forth, until Hernandez dropped in a tip off ofAubrii Williams for a kill to make the score, 16-14. Aubrii Williams would hit the foul pole with a hit on the next play and the Lady Cats were able to keep the rally going, as Ray set Hernandez up for a kill, extending their lead to, 18-14.

Hernandez delivered another kill off of the block attempt byAbrie Gomez, but the Lady Hornettes would score back-to-back points to make the score, 19-16. Cobi Saldana would regain the serve for Littlefield, as she dropped in a tip off of Del toro for a kill, making the score, 20-16. A save attempt by Chasco didn’t make it back inside the foul pole, but a kill attempt by Lopez on the next play sailed out of bounds, trimming the lead to, 21-17.

Tulia couldn’t capitalize, as Del toro was called for a double-hit, however, they would get the serve back, after Cobi Saldana sent a hit into the net, making the score, 22-18. Chasco delivered a tip at the net for a kill and Franco served up an ace off of Torres to cut the lead to, 22-20, as Littlefield took a timeout to talk things over.

Out of the break, Chasco delivered a kill off of the block attempt by Lopez, but Tulia couldn’t keep the rally going, after Chasco sent a kill into the net, making the score, 23-21. Solomon delivered a kill off of Torres to make it a one-point game, but Cali Saldana dropped a kill on the sideline and Torres followed it up with an ace in front of Franco, as the Lady Cats took set two, 25-22.

Littlefield jumped out to a quick, 20, lead in set three, but Tulia responded with a kill in front of Cali Saldana to make the score, 2-1. Franco sent a kill sailing out of bounds and Ray followed it up with an ace off of Abeyta, before Cali Saldana sent a kill sailing out of bounds to trim the lead to, 4-2.

Atip from Madi Williams fell short of the net for the Lady Cats and Ray sent a hit out of bounds to tie the set, 4-4. The Lady Cats would answer, as Ray set Cali Saldana up for a kill to regain the lead, 5-4, but Tulia would go on a, 1-6, scoring run, taking a, 610, lead, as the Lady Cats took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Franco sent a serve short of the net, but Tulia would respond quickly, as Solomon scored back-to-back kills and Del toro served up an ace, before sending a serve out of bounds to make the score, 8-13. Cal Saldana sent a hit into the net, but McNeese delivered a kill off of Chasco to make the score, 9-14.

Abrie Gomez delivered a kill in front of Tailyn Gomez, but a hit out of bounds by Franco, would spark a rally for Littlefield. Franco sent a hit into the net and Hernandez followed it up with a kill to trim the lead to, 12-15. Franco came across the net on a dig attempt, as Tulia took a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Ray served up an ace inside the back boundary line and Cali Saldana followed it up with a kill to tie the set, 15-15. Ray served up back-to-back aces, before Franco sent a hit into the net on a return, pushing the lead to, 18-15. Ray had a tip land out of bounds on the sideline and Cali Saldana had a kill land out of bounds on the sideline, making the score, 1817.

Hernandez delivered a kill off of Del toro’s block attempt and she followed it up with a tip at the net for a kill, making the score, 20-17. Madi Williams was blocked by Del toro and Aubrii Williams for a kill and Cobi Saldana was called for being on the net, cutting the lead to, 20-19. Tulia would drop in a tip for a kill to tie the set, 20-20, but Jerrica Brookins sent a serve short of the net, making the score, 21-20.

Cobi Saldana set a ball up that was tipped over the net by Lopez for a kill, but Chasco answered with a kill off of the block attempt by Lopez, making the score, 22-21. A block on the next play by Lopez fell in for a kill, but Cali Saldana sent a kill into the net on the next play, making the score, 23-22.

Abrie Gomez was called for a lift, as Tulia took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Cali Saldana sent a kill into the net and Lopez sent a hit out of bounds to tie the set, 2424. McNeese and Lopez delivered a block that was dug out by Franco, but the ball floated over the net and landed out of bounds for a Lady Cat point. However, Tulia would not go away, as Solomon dropped in a kill off of Torres to tie the set, 25-25.

On the next play, Van Pelt sent a hit into the net and Hernandez closed out the set with a kill off of Aubrii Williams, as Littlefield took set three, 2725, and the match, 3-0.

The Lady Cats will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12th when they host the Childress Lady Cats.

First set is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
