Week two of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest brought lots of great match-ups as we also got the first weekend of College Football.
We had two contestants tie for first place this week with a score of 16-4. The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of Jim Ned and Sweetwater, which was 70 points. Jan Smith just edged out Marcelino Garcia Jr. with a guess of 49 points to Garcia’s guess of 48 points.
Jim Davis Jr. finished in third place this week with a mark of 15-5.
In the High School ranks, Littlefield won a slugfest over Denver City, 18-14, while Dimmitt picked up their first win of the season, taking down the Olton Mustangs, 14-6. Amherst 45’ed Hart, 48-0, and Anton shutout Southland, 50-0. Sundown clobbered Sudan, 40-0, while Lockney won a low-scoring affair over Floydada, 9-0.
Abernathy took it to the Slaton Tigers, winning, 46-8, while New Deal took down Wellington, 28-6, and Forsan defeated Post, 22-6. Snyder downed Levelland, 45-7, to round out the list of high school games.
The first week of college football brought some great matchups, as Alabama routed Miami, 44-13. Penn State won a top 20 match-up over Wisconsin, 16-10, while Iowa blasted Indiana, 34-6. Texas took down Louisiana, 38-18, while Georgia went on the road and took down Clemson, 10-3.
UCLA pulled the upset over LSU, 38-27, while Air Force took down Lafayette, 35-14, and Marshall took down Navy, 49-7. Oregon State fell to Purdue on the road, 30-21, while Texas Tech took down Houston on the road, 38-21.

Those who finished 14-6 this week were Bobby Cunningham, Donna Neinast, Lyndel Evans, Marcus Garcia, Martin Duran, Oscar Sanchez and Ronnie Martin, while Brenda Herrell, David Neinast, Ed Dabrowski, JR Herrell, Lonnie Neinast, Mark Grace, Robin Elliott, Teresa Dabrowski, Terrill Moorhead, Thomas Blackstone and Tommy Cloninger each finished 13-7 this week.
Floyce Pierce, Ivan Estrada, Jimmy Davis Sr., Johnny Rosemond, Kay Cloninger, Richard Orozco, Sam Castillo and Stevy Smith each finished 12-8 this week, while Alma Castillo, Devin Garcia, Dewayne Hayes and Warren Dayton each finished 11-9.
Keeley Adams and Marcelino Castillo each finished 10-10, while Juan Hernandez and Larry Ashley each finished 9-11 to round out the competition this week.
In the overall standings, Sanchez leads the way with 29 points in first place, but he is followed closely by Duran and David Neinast, who are tied for second overall with 28 points. Donna Neinast and Lonnie Neinast are tied for third place with 27 points, while Garcia Jr., Evans, Marcus Garcia, Martin, Blackstone and Tommy Cloninger are tied for fourth with 26 points.
Jan Smith and Rosemond are tied for fifth with 25 points, while David Jr., Bobby Cunningham, JR Herrell, Moorhead, Estrada and Kay Cloninger are tied for sixth with 24 points. Ed Dabrowski, Grace, Teresa Dabrowski, Devin Garcia and Dayton are tied for seventh with 23 points, while Pierce, Davis Sr., and Marcelino Castillo are tied for eighth with 22 points.
Elliott, Hayes and Hernandez are tied for ninth with 21 points and Ashley rounds out the top 10 with 20 points.
