Ivan Estrada wins week seven en of Football Contest

Week seven of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest kicked-off the start of district play for most of our high school teams.

We had six contestants finish tied for first with a mark of 17-3 this week: Ivan Estrada, Lyndel Evans, Mark Grace, Oscar Sanchez, Stevy Smith and Tommy Cloninger.

The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of the Jaguars and Titans, which was 56 points.

By way of tie-breaker, Estrada took first place with a guess of 49 points, while Tommy Cloninger placed second with a guess of 48 points and Grace finished third with a guess of 47 points.

In the high school ranks this week, Littlefield fell on the road to River Road, 41-20, while Olton fell at home to Panhandle, 42-20, in their district-opener. Amherst took care of Lazbuddie, 51-20, to open district play, and Bovina won a low-scoring affair over Sudan, 6- 0.

Anton won a thriller over Whitharral on the road, 56-51, while Legacy throttled Frenship, 68-28, and Shallowater shutout Brownfield, 40-0. Sundown defeated Post, 7-0, while Motley County defeated Guthrie, 90-12, and Meadow took down Wellman-Union, 67-22.

In the college ranks, Oklahoma won a stunner over Texas, 55-48, while Notre Dame rallied back on the road to take down Virginia Tech, 32-29. Ole Miss won a barnburner over Arkansas, 52-51, while Georgia blasted Auburn, 34-10, and Texas A&M held off Alabama, 41-38, for the stunning upset in College Station.

In the NFL, the Cowboys defeated the conference foe, Giants, 44-20, while the Saints won at Washington, 33-22, and the Steelers picked up a win at home over the Broncos, 27-19. The Packers defeated the Bengals in overtime, 25-22, and the Patriots took down the Texans, 25-22.

The rest of the contestant results for week seven are as follows:

Lonnie Neinast and Marcelino Garcia Jr., each finshed 16-4 this week, while Alma Castillo, Devin Garcia, Johnny Rosemond, JR Herrell, Kay Cloninger, Marcus Garcia, Richard Orozco and Terrill Moorhead each finished 15-5, this week.

Those who finished 14-6 this week were Donna Neinast, David Neinast and Martin Duran Jr., while Jan Smith, Jim Davis Sr., and Thomas Blackstone each finished 13-7. Bobby Cunningham, Dewayne Hayes, Ed Dabrowski, Larry Ashley, Marcelino Castillo and Sam Castillo each finished 12-8 this week, while Floyce Pierce and Robin Elliott each finished 11-9.

Jim David Jr. finished 10-10 this week, while Teresa Dabrowski finished 9-11.

In the overall standings, Evans and Tommy Cloninger are tied for first place with 103 points, while Donna Neinast is in second place with 102 points and Estrada, Sanchez, and Lonnie Neinast are tied for third with 100 points.

Garcia Jr., and David Neinast are tied for fourth with 99 points, while Rosemond and Kay Cloninger are tied for fifth with 98 points, and Grace and Moorhead are tied for sixth with 97 points.

JR Herrell is in seventh place with 94 points, while Jan Smith and Blackstone are tied for eighth with 93 points and Hayes sits alone in ninth place with 92 points.

Davis Sr., Ed Dabrowski and Davis Jr. round out the top 10 with 91 points each.
