HPWD to present rainwater harvesting information

Farmers, ranchers, agency personnel, educators, and the interested public are invited to attend the next Stewarding Our Aquifer Field Day presented by Ogallala Commons on Tuesday, October 13th from 9:30a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Nazareth, TX.

Activities will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Home Mercantile Building (corner of Second and Leo Streets, one block south of Holy Family Church) with socially distanced presentations.

Katherine Drury, Education & Outreach Coordinator, with the High Plains Water District in Lubbock will present some information on the District’s Annual Water Level Measurements Program. She will spend most of her presentation talking about largescale Rainwater Harvesting examples in the area and the benefits to sustaining our groundwater resources.

A second presentation will be given by Alan Birkenfeld, owner/ manager of a 640-acre farm on the Castro-Swisher county line where the groundwater levels are stable and rising. Birkenfeld will give an overview of his vision, discuss use of cover crops, plus grazing and management practices used to transition to grass farming.

At 10:45 a.m., participants can travel in their vehicles out to Alan’s farm for a walking tour.

At 11:45 a.m., the tour will move back towards Nazareth for a walking tour of a 10,000-gallon rainwater harvesting system at Casa La Entereza (1/2 mile south of Nazareth at 1555 FM 168).

At 12:30 p.m., the group will reconvene at the Home Mercantile where a sandwich lunch will be provided, followed by remarks by ag journalist Jim Steiert to conclude the tour at 1:00 p.m.

Registration for the event is $15 per person (which includes the cost of lunch and snacks.)
