Hockley Co. Extension Office to host Service Crop Production and Risk Production program

Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service Crop Production and Risk Production will take place on Dec. 18th at the Hockley County Extension Office located at 1212 Houston St., Levelland, Texas.

The cost is $25. The Program is approved by TDA for seven CEU’s (1 L&R, 2 IPM, 1 Drift, 3 General). All Panhandle and South Plains Counties (Participants in- person/ speakers via TEAMS).

Registration will be at 8 a.m. (7 CEU’s Offered).

Equipment Check in the Counties will be at 8:20 a.m.

At 8:30 a.m., Know your Pesticide Laws and Regulations – Comprehensive look at the pesticide laws and regulations, EPA updates, and licensing/Certification guidelines, presented by Cheryl Goswick, Texas Department of Agriculture.

At 9:20 a.m., Weed Management decisions. Status of Product availability and ongoing research Strategies in managing weed pests including conventional cotton. Long-term goals with resistant weed control, presented by Dr. Peter Dotray, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension/ Texas Tech University.

At 10:10 a.m., Update on Cotton, Corn, Sorghum Insect Pests, Potential Pest issues, resources, and new technologies, pre-sented by Dr. David Kerns – Corn Leafhopper update and issues, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension; Dr. Suhas Vyavhare – Cotton Insects, Texas A& M AgriLife Extension; Dr. Pat Porter – SWCB Potential Issues, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

There will be a break at 11 a.m. and at 11:15 a.m., Dr. Morgan Treadwell, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will present Options for controlling woody species on rangeland ( chemical, mechanical, burning) and exciting new research projects on managing control and monitoring grazing, Management and use of pesticides following wildfires.

Lunch will be at 12:05 p.m. and the presentations will resume at 12:30 p.m. as Dr. Ken Lege, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension presents Cotton Pre- plant decisions and management (variety decisions, populations studies, row spacings, seed quality and treatments, etc.)

At 1:20 p.m., Dr. Jourdan Bell, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension will present Matching available water to planted acreage and crop selection, Plant-Soil-Water Relationships.

At 2:10 p.m., Dr. Ken Obasa, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, will have a discussion and updates on diseases and viruses in Panhandle Crops to close out the program.
