The Olton Fillies’ varsity basketball team took down the host team Lady Panthers on Saturday, 39-36, in the Whitharral Tournament Championship.
With the win, the Fillies improve to 13-4 overall on the season.
Analise Ramage drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Mariana Gallegos to open the contest and she followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Gallegos, drawing an and-one foul on Sheridan Neal. She missed the free throw, leaving the score, 5-0, with 5:55 to play in the opening quarter.
Rylee Kristinek was fouled on an attempt by Kambri Ruiz and made one-of-two shots at the line to get the Lady Panthers on the board and Paige Smith followed it up with a three from the top of the key to cut the Olton lead to one point, 5-4, with 4:46 to play in the first quarter. Madi Chavez knocked down a three from the top of the key off of the assist from Paige Smith to put Whitharral in front, 7-5, but on the other end, Kaybree Ramon was fouled on an attempt by Chavez, earning a trip to the line. She split the free throw attempts, cutting the lead to, 7-6, with 3:31 remaining in the quarter.
Taryn Smith dropped in a layup off of an assist from Kaleigh Geldenhuys, but Chavez was fouled on the floor by Geldenhuys, her second; she converted both free throw to give the Lady Panthers a one-point advantage, 9-8, heading into quarter number two.
Chavez drew a shooting foul on Geldenhuys to open the second frame, her third. Chavez made oneof- two shots from the line, but on the other end, Yarely Santillan drove the lane kicking it out to Gallegos, who buried a three from the left elbow to give Olton a onepoint advantage, 11-10.
Paige Smith drained a three from the left wing, as the Lady Panthers took a time out with 5:59 to play in the first half. Out of the break, Ruiz was fouled on an attempt by Neal, her second. She split the attempts at the line, cutting the lead back to one point, 13-12. With 4:18 to play in the half, Chavez was fouled on an attempt by Llama Ramirez. She split the free throws to make it a one-possession game, but it was short-lived as Ramirez responded with a lay-up off of an assist by Taryn Smith, tying the game, 1414.
The Lady Panthers knocked down a jumper from the left side, bu Ramage answered with a layup off of the assist from Ruiz, keeping the game tied, 16-16. With 2:33 to play in the half, Harlow Gorman knocked down a jumper from the right elbow to give Olton the lead, 18-16, but on the other end, Paige Smith was fouled on a three-point attempt by Gorman. She made twoof- three shots from the line to tie the game, 18-18.
Gallegos buried a jumper from the top of the key off of the assist from Gorman and with a minute to play in the half, Geldenhuys drained a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Santillan, pushing their lead to, 23- 18. Gallegos followed it up with a putback off of her own miss, but in the closing seconds of the half, Noeli Reyna knocked down a jumper from the right wing to close the gap, making the score, 25-20, going into the locker room at halftime.
After a slow start to the second half, Santillan knocked down a jumper from the left wing to extend the Olton lead to, 27-20, with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter. Paige Smith drew a block on Ramirez and converted both shots from the free-throw line to make the score, 27-22. After a turnover by Trinity Coronado, Taryn Smith knocked down a jumper from the right elbow Whitharral took a time out with 1:45 to play in the third, trailing the Fillies, 29-22.
With time winding down in the third quarter, Chavez was fouled on the floor by Taryn Smith, her second. Chavez converted both free throws to make it a five-point game, 29-24, going into the final quarter of play.
Olton took a time out with 7:09 left to play in the game and out of the break, Paige Smith drew a block on Ruiz, her third. She made one-of-two shots from the line and on their next possession, Rylee Kristinek was fouled on a putback attempt by Geldenhuys, who fouled out of the contest with 5:13 left to play. She made one-of-two shots from the line to make it a three-point Olton lead, 29-26, but on the next play Taryn Smith was intentionally fouled by Chavez, her third. Smith missed both free throws, but she followed it up with a lay-up to push the lead to, 31-26.
Paige Smith dropped in a lay-up for the Lady Panthers and on the following possession, Kristinek was fouled on the floor by Santillan, who fouled out of the contest with 3:53 to play. She sank both free throws, cutting the lead to one point, 31-30. after a Lady Panther time out, Taryn Smith hit Gallegos in transition for a lay-up to push their lead to three points, 33-30.
With under two minutes to play, Gallegos was dropped in a lay-up to make it a five-point game, but on the other end, Paige Smith was fouled on the floor by Gallegos, her second. She made one of two shots from the line to make the score, 34-31. Taryn Smith answered with a lay-up in transition for Olton, but Kristinek responded with a three from the left wing for Whitharral, cutting the lead to, 3734, with 1:23 left to play.
Olton took a time out with 1:16 to play and out of the break, Paige Smith was fouled on an attempt by Ramage, her fourth. She made both shots at the line to make it a one-point game, 37-36. After an Olton time out with just over 30 seconds remaining, Ramage was fouled on the floor by Coronado and made both shots at the line to push their lead to three points, 3936, as Olton held on for the Championship victory.
Gallegos led the team in scoring with 11 points, while Ramage netted nine points and Smith chipped in eight points. Geldenhuys contributed three points, while Ramirez, Santillan and Gorman each added two points and Ramon and Ruiz each finished with one point in the contest.
The Fillies hosted Whitharral on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Friday when they host Patton Springs.
