Edith Bryant retiring from 61 years, styling hair

Tuesday afternoon, I had the distinct honor to interview Mrs. Edith Bryant, of Amherst, via telephone, for the Lamb County Leader-News.

After 61 years of hair styling, Mrs. Bryant is now retiring at the wonderful age of 95 years young.

Edith Bryant was born and spent her early life in Sunnyside, Texas. She came to Amherst in January, 1937, when she was 11 years old, after a tragic fire took the life of her Mother. She was the next oldest out of six children, so she began raising the rest of the children, because of her Mother’s absence. The youngest of her siblings was less than a month old at that time.

Mrs Bryant was married, but sadly lost her husband around 30 years ago. Together they had a daughter, Judy Hunter, who lives in Gainesville. She has two grandsons, two granddaughters, and a great-great-grandson, and a great-great-granddaughter as well.

Mrs. Bryant went to Jesse Lee’s Hair Institute, where she earned her degree, and upon graduation in September,1959, began a busy life of hair styling on Sept. 10th, 1959, working for Billie McCurry on East 7th or 8th Street here. After about a year and a half there, Mrs. Bryant went to work for Sudie Thedford where JoD’s Salon is at present. Then around July 11th, 1963, she moved her business to West Delano, then upon closing that shop, she moved to a shop behind the Old Tasty Taco Restaurant here in Littlefield.

In 1976, Mrs. Bryant bought the building on Hall Avenue and had her Hair Salon there until 2001 when she went to work in Amherst with Wanda Patterson, until Wanda’s Hair Salon closed. Leaving there, Mrs. Bryant went to work in Ann’s Cottage here in Littlefield, until that shop closed, and she moved back to JoD’s Hair Salon this past May, 2020

She retired from JoD’s, on her last day, Friday, Nov. 27, 2020.

The employees at JoD’s, stated they’re going to truly Miss Mrs. Bryant upon her retirement.

Mrs. Bryant, we wish you the very best on your wonderful retirement, and hope you’ll enjoy some well-earned rest now.
