Week two of the Lamb County Leader-News Football Contest saw a tough outing for several collegiate teams, as well as the start of the NFL season.
This weeks first-place winner was Donna Neinast, who finished with a mark of 15-5.
We had four contestants tie for second place with a mark of 14-6, including, Ivan Estrada, Jan Smith, Micky Orozco and Stevy Smith.
The tie-breaker this week was the combined score of Rice vs Texas Southern, which was 76 points. Taking second place by way of tie-breaker was Estrada, who guessed 60 points. Taking third place, also by way of tiebreaker, was Jan Smith, who guessed 53 points, beating out Stevy Smith’s guess of 49 points and Micky Orozco’s guess of 49 points.
In the High School Ranks, Littlefield went on the road against Denver City, taking down the Mustangs, 35-14. Olton went to Dimmitt and shutout the Bobcats, 55-0, while Sudan won a shootout at Tahoka, 67- 60. Springlake-Earth won their homecoming game over Paducah, 7134, while Amherst 45’ed Christ the King on Thursday, 54-6, and Anton took down Dawson on Friday, 57-12.
Lubbock Christian handled Sundown, 47-14, while Texico, N.M. took down Farwell, 32-19, and Sunray shutout Abernathy, 39-0.
In the college ranks, Texas went into the “Big House” in Ann Arbor and blasted the Wolverines, 31-12, while Pittsburgh edged out Cincinnati on the road, 28-27 and Michigan State defeated Maryland, 27-24. Notre Dame suffered its worse loss in school history, falling at home to Northern Illinois, 16-14, while Illinois took down Kansas, 23-17.
In the NFL, the Steelers got the best of the Falcons, 18-10, while the Texans outlasted the Colts, 2927, and the Dolphins won on a last second field goal over the Jaguars, 20-17. The Cowboys went into Cleveland and handled the Browns, 33-17, while the Chargers took down the Raiders, 22-10.
Those, who finished 13-7 this week were Brenda Herrell, Charlie Smith, David Neinast, JC Orozco, Johnny Rosemond, Mark Grace, Richard Orozco, Robin Elliott, Ronnie Martin and Sam Castillo. Contestants, who went 12-8 this week were Alma Castillo, Jazmine Davis, Maria Pinon, Martin Duran and Terrill Moorhead, while those who went 11-9 this week were, Amanda Gonzales, Dewayne Hayes, James Hood, JR Herrell, Juan Garza, Larry Ashley, Lonnie Neinast and Tommy Cloninger.
Nancy Smith and Teresa Dabrowski each went 10-10 this week, while Ed Dabrowski finished 8-12 and Martin Duran Jr finished 6-14.
In the overall standings, Stevy Smith is in first place with 30 points, followed closely in second place by Estrada, who has 29 points. In third place with 27 points are Jan Smith, Richard Orozco, Elliott, Martin and Alma Castillo.
Sitting in fourth place with 26 points are, Donna Neinast, Micky Orozco, Brenda Herrell, JC Orozco, Martin Duran, Gonzales and Garza, while Rosemond, Moorhead and Lonnie Neinast are tied for fifth with 25 points. Tied for sixth with 24 points are David Neinast, Grace, Sam Castillo, Davis, Hood, JR Herrell, Cloninger, Nancy Smith and Teresa Dabrowski.
With 23 points in seventh place are Hayes and Ashley, while Pinon sits in eight with 20 points, Ed Dabrowski sits in ninth with 19 points and rounding out the field is Charlie Smith with 13 points.
