Five hundred years of history Growing a fiber crop American cotton “used to be great” Is what you hear nonstop We used to be this, used to be that It’s never been this bad Where has our industry gone wrong?
We should have stayed where we were at We tend to reminisce in the dark times Of a more beautiful past Forgetting that those before us Didn’t know if they would last Price, cost and policy, Oh My! We’re never going to make it Which straw will break the camel’s back?
We’re no longer able to fake it The finger pointing starts anew As it has throughout history Yet farmers who retired long ago Echoed the same problems as you and me It doesn’t mean the suffering isn’t real The industry struggles to renew it’s flow But according to newspapers from way back This isn’t cotton’s first rodeo We’ve been here before Generations of problems and warnings But just like that a new day dawns And joy comes in the morning -Anonymous
