Anton man arrested on two counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals

The Hockley County Sheriff’s Office has announced Billy Sherrod, 53, of Anton has been arrested for two counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals.

According to a press release provided from the HCSO, witnesses observed Sherrod driving down a roadway with two dogs tethered to the back of his vehicle.

On Sunday, August 6, the HCSO received reports referencing animal cruelty occurring near the 400 block of Ellwood Street in Anton.

Multiple deputies responded to the area where an investigation was conducted. Witness statements and evidence were taken to identify a suspect, but while investigating, dispatch informed the deputies of a possible disturbance involving multiple parties.

It was later determined the altercation was in relation to the animal cruelty investigation.

On Monday, August 7th, deputies obtained warrants for the arrest of Sherrod for two counts of cruelty to non-livestock animals, both felony offenses in the third degree.

Deputies took Sherrod into custody without incident and was booked into the Hockley County Jail.

A statement from the HCSO Facebook stated, “we are grateful for the cooperation with members of the Anton community in reporting such offenses, and for our personnel in efficiently bringing the case to a resolution. All cases will be referred to the appropriate prosecutor for filing of any, and all, criminal offenses related to the incident.”
