44th annual Sandhills Celebration

The 44th annual Olton Sandhills Celebration continued last Friday and Saturday with a variety of events.

Dog Show

The “Best of Show” title for the dog show went to Sky and her owner Gideon Perez.

There was also a raffle for those who entered the dog show to win goodie baskets with dog treats and toys inside of them. The winners are as follows: · Small Dog Basket Donated by The Swanky Gypzie: Pearl with her owner Eli Ruiz.

• Medium Dog Basket Donated by Kody Carson Farms: Bella with her owner Alyssa Rivera.

• Large Dog Basket Donated by Adri’s Kitchen: Toby with his owner Reeslyn Riney.

Cake Auction

There was a cake auction for the benefit of the Sandcrawl Museum. I took various photos of the auction.

Volleyball Tournament 

The Volleyball Tournament took place Friday night with Crystal Gems (from Lubbock) taking first place and Let’s Get Setsy (From Amarillo/Plainview) taking second place.

Cornhole Tournament, Day 1 

The winners of the cornhole tournament on day 1 were as follows:

• 1st Place: Chris & Jordan Ruiz

• 2nd Place: Joshua Jalomo & Blaine Jimenez

• 3rd Place: Anna Mejia & Nathan Green

Dance featuring DJ Ferly

DJ Ferly (Froilan Reyna) played music for the dance on Friday night.

WB Dickinson Parade

The WB Dickinson Parade kicked things off on Saturday, with Lauren Matter from KAMC News judging the parade entries. The winners of the parade are as follows: 

• 1st Place - OHS Cheerleaders.

• 2nd Place - OHS Class of 1989.

• 3rd Place - South Plains Waste.

Honoring Jo Helen Harrell with

the “Above and Beyond Award”

Jo Helen was honored for her years of service to the Olton Chamber of Commerce and the greater Olton community for her dedication to providing her and her late husband’s (Joe Harrell) collection of classic cars to the WB Dickinson Parade and helping put on the annual car show at Sandhills. Many Parade Marshals, Sandhills Queens, Miss Sandhills Sweethearts, First Runner-Ups, and Miss Congeniality winners have ridden in her cars over the last several years.

Joe Harrell Memorial Car Show

The Joe Harrell Memorial Car Show took place on Saturday. The winners of the car show are as follows: • 1st Place - Juan Zuniga with his orange and white 1969 Chevy pick up.

• 2nd Place - Lupe Zambrano with his “Blue Meanie,” a blue 2003 Mustang Mach 1

• 3rd Place - Juan Zuniga with his blue 1991 Camaro.

Inflatable Water Slides

Inflatable water slides were at Stiles Park for the kids to play with.

OJH Cheeleaders’ Tennis Ball Drop

The Olton Junior High cheerleaders hosted a tennis ball drop. They sold over 640 balls at $5 a ball. The winners are as follows:

• 1st Place - Travis Walters - won approximately $1,600 in cash, half of the total amount raised for the tennis ball drop.

• 2nd place - Rodney Smith

• 3rd place - Robyn Stevenson Second place won a large metal “O” yard sign and third place both won a metal rain gauge, both from Steel Grace in Olton.

Olton Lions Club Disbanding and Dispersing Funds to Olton Community Organizations

The Olton Lions Club announced that they will be disbanding and they dispersed what remained of their funds to the following organizations:

A golf scramble was held at the Olton Country Club. The winners are as follows:

• 2nd Place - Ryan Duran, Chris Ruiz, Scott Reese, and Frankie Rivera.

• 3rd Place - Robert Richards and Keric, Kylee, and Kyle Noack.

OVAA Gun Raffle

The winner of the Olton Volunteer Ambulance’s gun raffle was Matt Collier.
