Wolverines set to take on O’Donnell

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity football team picked up a huge win at Cowboy Corral last Thursday over #8 Happy, 68-36.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to 2-1 overall on the season.

“I was pleased with our performance,” Head Coach Israel DeLeon said. “I feel we have a long ways to go as far as being a state caliber team. We need to work on keeping our composure.”

The Wolverines totaled 533 yards of offense, including 273 passing yards and 260 rushing yards.

Junior, Braxton Ethridge, was 10-14 passing for 197 yards, while senior, Evan DeLeon, was four-of-five passing for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

Ethridge led the rushing attack with 15 carries for 144 yards and three touchdowns, while senior fullback, Keshan Holmes, tallied 12 carries for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Senior, Trace Goodman, tallied two carries for 19 yards, while Roel Fuentes chipped in three carries for 18 yards and one touchdown. Tim Tanaro also had one carry for five yards and one touchdown. In the receiving game, Derrick Rosalez had two catches for 41 yards and one touchdown, while Ethridge had one catch for 18 yards and a score. Defensively, The Wolverines held Happy to 259 yards of offense, including 124 passing yards and 135 rushing yards.

Fuentes had four tackles and two sacks, while Holmes recorded six tackles and a sack and Jerry Gallegos tallied two tackles and a sack. Rosalez had six tackles and four assists, while Ethridge also recorded four tackles. Cain Tovar came away with a fumble recovery in the contest.

This week they turn their attention to O’Donnell.

Coach DeLeon talked about what they will have to do in order to keep O’Donnell in check, saying, “We have to keep pressure on their backfield; they have good receivers and an explosive backfield.”

He added, “I feel we can execute better on offense. Our running game is not where it needs to be and I would like to see better blocking.”
