WOLVERINES FALL TO COYOTES IN REGIONAL PLAY-OFF

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity football team saw their season come to an end on Friday night in Slaton, at the hands of the Six-Man Division I, #2 Borden County Coyotes, 71-16.

With the loss, the Wolverines finish the season with a mark of 7-4 overall, and were District and Bidistrict champions.

Springlake-Earth won the toss and deffered to the second half, giving Borden County the ball to begin the contest.

The Coyotes recovered the onside kick attempt at their own 30-yard line and wasted no time getting started on offense. They capped off a five-play drive, with a 16-yard touchdown pass, as Trey Edwards connected with Mason Cole for the score. The kick by Kylan Edwards was good, making the score, 8-0, with 8:04 to play in the opening quarter.

Springlake-Earth took over after the kick off at their own 18-yard line, as junior, Evan DeLeon, connected with junior, Trace Goodman, 16 yards and a Wolverine first down, moving the ball up to the 34-yard line. However, the drive would stall out, and on fourth and long, DeLeon’s pass to Roel Fuentes was stopped short of the sticks for a turnover on downs with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter.

The Coyotes found the endzone again two plays later, as Trey Edwards rushed for a 33-yard touchdown with 6:19 to play in the quarter. The kick after was good, stretching their lead to, 16-0.

The Wolverines went four and out on their next possession, giving the Coyotes the ball at the Wolverine’s 37-yard line. Kylan Edwards carried the ball on first down, taking it down to the 15-yard line to set up first and goal and three plays later, Tommy Kingston carried the ball in for an eight-yard touchdown with 4:33 remaining in the quarter. The kick after was good, making the score, 24-0.

The Wolverine’s fortunes didn’t get any better offensively as they began their next drive. They were flagged for a false start on first down, but managed to pick up six yards on a run by sophomore, Braxton Ethridge on the next play. But, on second and 14, DeLeon dropped back and was sacked by Trey Edwards and Cole, backing them up to third and 32. On the third and long play, DeLeon was picked offby Kylan Edwards with 3:11 to play in the quarter.

Borden County would score on the next play, as Kingston connected with Austin Buchanan for a 32-yard touchdown with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. The kick after was good, the 32-0.

Springlake-Earth took over after the kick-off deep in their own territory, as junior, Keshan Holmes, took the carry on first down for 10 yards around the left side. Ethridge took a carry around the right side and picked up the first down, taking the ball up to the Borden County 28-yard line. Holmes picked up five yards on first down, before taking the next carry 23-yards for the touchdown with 1:29 remaining in the quarter. The kick by Holmes was good, making the score, 32-8.

Borden County responded quickly on first down, as Kylan Edwards took a carry around the left side for a 32-yard touchdown. His kick after was good, pushing their lead out to, 40-8, with 1:19 remaining in the quarter.

The Wolverines took their next possession into the second quarter, but on fourth and five, Ethridge connected with DeLeon, who was popped by Ishmael Rodriguez for a turnover on downs with 9:52 remaining in the first half.

The Coyotes would score 31 unanswered points, before the Wolverines came away with a turnover with just over 1:30 left in the half. Dorian Samaron recovered a fumbled snap by the Coyotes to get the ball back for SpringlakeEarth.
