The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team braved the elements on Thursday, as they fell to New Home’s JV, 4-3, in their tournament-opener of the 2022 Shorty Barlow Classic.

With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 0-1 in tournament play.

The Wolverines’ bats were kept quiet in the top of the first inning, and in the bottom half of the side, Davey Crandall gave up a lead-off walk to Dylan to lead things off. Crandall got Owen to strike out swinging for out number one, but Dylan stole second on a past ball and Jacob followed it up with a single through the left side, taking second on the throw into the infield.

Crandall got Kaden to strike out swinging for out number two, but gave up a walk to Hayden to laod the bases for New Home. Graham hit a two-RBI single down the third-base line to put the Leopards up, 2-0, and Cooper followed it up with an RBI-double up the middle to extend their lead to, 3-0. Nevia would ground out to second base to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Crandall struck out looking for out number one and Xavyer Mosqueda grounded out to Own on the mound for out number two. Josh Samaron beat out a grounder to the shortstop, as Cooper made a high throw to first that pulled Kayden off the bag to give the Wolverines a runner. However, he would be stranded on base, as Gavin Gonzales struck out looking to retire the side.

Crandall hit Cager to open the bottom of the second inning, but got the next three batters in order, as Dylan and Owen both struck out swinging and Jacob struck out looking to end the inning.

Braden Bradley struck out looking to begin the third inning for Springlake-Earth, but Tyler Tanaro drew a walk and Slade Beerwinkle laid a bunt down in front of the plate that was fielded by Owen and thrown to first for out number two, as Tanaro advanced to second on the play. Again the Wolverines would strand a runner on base, as Alex Alvarez struck out looking to retire the side.

Kaden started off the bottom of the third inning with a liner to left field, but on the next play, he was canned at second on the throw down from Mosqueda behind the plate for out number one. Hayden popped up to Tanaro at first base for out number two, and Graham grounded out to Evan DeLeon at shortstop for out number three.

DeLeon drew a lead-off walk in the top of the fourth inning and Crandall hit a grounder to shortstop, who made the throw to first, but Kayden came off of the bag early trying to make a play at third on DeLeon, but there was no one covering the bag, putting runners on the corners for Springlake-Earth.

Crandall beat out a rundown to get to second with some help from DeLeon at third and Mosqueda hit a sacrifice grounded to Cooper at shortstop, who got the out at first, as DeLeon scored to cut into the lead, making the score, 3-1. Samaron, though, would ground out to second base and Gonzales struck out swinging to retire the side.

New Home added an insurance run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning and with time running out in the top of the fifth inning, Bradley and Tanaro both struck out looking to lead off the inning. Beerwinkle was hit by a pitch to give the Wolverines a base runner Alvarez drew a walk and DeLeon followed it up with a two- RBI double to right field to cut the lead to, 4-3, but the rally ended when Crandall struck out swinging to retire the side.

The Wolverines kept the Leopards quiet in the bottom half of the inning, but time expired, as New Home JV took the win, 4-3, over the Wolverines.

Crandall pitched three innings, giving up five walks and three runs, while earning five strikeouts. DeLeon pitched two innings in relief duty giving up three walks and one run, while earning two strikeouts.
