Wildcats win first district meeting of season with Cubs, 74-54

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team secured an important win over the Brownfield Cubs on Tuesday, 74-54, at Wildcat Gymnasium, as they remain atop the District 3-3A Standings.

With the win the Wildcats improve to 11-10 overall, 3-0 in district play on the season.

Jeremiah Trevino opened the contest with a steal on the Wildcats end of the floor and finished the play with a lay-up to put them in front, 2-0. The Cubs, though, would answer as Jeron Lawrence answered with a three from the right elbow, however, on the other end, Ryan Williams came right back with a three of his own from the left elbow for Littlefield to stretch their lead to, 5-3, with 7:10 to play in the opening quarter.

Pedro Rodriguez banked in a three from the left elbow and Jojo Carillo followed it up with a floater off the backboard to put the Cubs in front, 8-5. Trevino responded with a take to the basket for a layup, but Carillo came right back on the other end with a lay-up on the left side to extend the Cubs’ lead to, 10-7, with 4:34 remaining in the first quarter.

Trevino scored back-to-back lay-ups off of assists from Elijah Salazar and then followed it up with a steal, taking it coast-tocoast for a lay-up to push the Littlefield lead out to three points, 13-10. Lawrence responded with a lay-up for the Cubs, but with time winding down in the quarter, Chip Green buried a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Ja’Den Williams and Salazar was fouled with 0.4 seconds remaining on a put-back attempt by Lawrence. He converted both free throws to push the Littlefield lead to, 18-12, as the first quarter came to a close.

KJ Carroll split a pair of free throws to open the second frame, but the Wildcats answered on the other end, as Ryan Williams dished a no-look pass to Omar Martinez for a floater in the lane, pushing their lead to, 20-13. Ryan Williams went coast-to-coast on the next play taking it himself for a lay-up and on their next possession, Salazar was fouled on an attempt by Jayden Gonzales. He converted one-of-two shots at the line to make it a 10-point lead for Littlefield, 23-13.

The Cubs took a time out with 4:10 to play in the half, and out of the break, Rodriguez buried a three from the top of the key, off of an assist from Carrillo to cut the lead to, 23-16. Littlefield took a time out with 3:11 to play in the half, and out of the break, Green drained a three from the right elbow and Ja’Den Williams sank a three from the left elbow off of the assist from Martinez, stretching their lead back out to, 29-16.

The Cubs would not go away, as Carrillo answered with back-toback threes from the right elbow to cut the lead to single digits, 2922. Green knocked down a leaner in the lane and Martinez followed it up with a floater in the lane to push their lead back to double-digits, 33-22. With under a minute to play in the half, Trevino spun to the basket for a lay-up to make the score, 35-22.

Carrillo dropped in a lay-up for the Cubs, drawing an and-one foul on Martinez. He converted the free throw to make it a 10-point game, but with time winding down in the half, Trevino spun to the basket for a lay-up off of the assist from Ja’Den Williams and Ryan Williams drained a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Green to close out the half with the Wildcats in front, 40-25.

Zeke Saenz split a pair of free throws to open the second half, but on the other end, Rodriguez was fouled on an attempt by Trevino, earning a trip to the line. He converted both free throws to trim the lead to, 41-27. Trevino answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Ryan Williams, but the Cubs came right back, as Malik Mason dropped in a lay-up to trim the lead to, 43-29, with 6:18 remaining in the third quarter.

Salazar dished a no-look bounce pass to Ryan Williams for a lay-up and Green followed it up with a three from the left wing, off of an assist from Salazar to push their lead back out to, 48-29, with 5:09 to play in the third. Lawrence was fouled on an attempt by Martinez and converted both free throws for the Cubs, but Green answered with a floater in the lane off of the inbound pass from Q Busby to make the score, 50-31.

Carroll knocked down a three from the left wing off of the assist from Gonzales, as the Cubs took a time out with 2:53 to play in the third. With 1:11 remaining in the quarter, Gonzales drove to the basket for a lay-up to cut the lead to, 50-36, but with under a minute to play, Martinez picked up a steal getting it ahead to Ja’Den Williams for a lay-up to extend the lead to, 52-36.

After a Littlefield time out, Mason knocked down a jumper from the right wing to close out the third quarter with the Wildcats leading, 52-38.

With 6:40 remaining in the contest, Lawrence was fouled on an attempt by Ryan Williams. He split the free throws, trimming the lead to, 52-39. Martinez went coast-tocoast, banking in a floater off the glass for the quick answer, but Brownfield came right back, as Mason knocked down a jumper from the right elbow to make the score, 54-41, as the Cubs took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Lawrence drove to the basket for a lay-up, but on the other end, Green was fouled on an attempt by Kaden McPherson. He knocked down both shots at the line to stretch the lead back out to, 56-43.

Trevino dropped in a lay-up from the left side off of the assist from Green and Martinez picked up a steal on the next play, taking it in for a fast-break lay-up, but Rodriguez answered with a three from the top of the key to trim the lead to, 60-46, as the Cubs took another time out to preserve the clock. Out of the break, Rodriguez buried another three from the top of the key, off of the assist from Lawrence, but Martinez answered with a lay-up and Salazar hit Green on a back-door cut for a lay-up on the following play to make the score, 64-49, with just under three minutes to play in the game.

Green knocked down a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Carroll, but on the other end, Carrillo was fouled on an attempt by MJ Randle, who picked up his fourth foul of the game. Carrillo split the attempts at the line to make the score, 66-50. The Wildcats called a time out on the floor to prevent a turnover, and out of the break, Martinez drove to the basket for a lay-up to push their lead to, 68-50. Busby followed it up with a steal on the defensive end, drawing a foul on a shot attempt by Mason. He converted both shots at the line to make the score, 70-50.

Carrillo dropped in a lay-up for the Cubs, but Randle and Salazar each knocked down a pair of free throws to close out the contest for the Wildcats, as they came out in front, 74-54.

Green led the team in scoring with 19 points, while Trevino netted 18 points, and Martinez chipped in 12 points. Ryan Williams also finished in double-figures scoring with 10 points.

Salazar and Ja’Den Williams each contributed five points, while Busby and Randle each added two points and Saenz finished with one point in the contest.

The Wildcats were at Dimmitt on Friday to take on the Bobcats. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a road game at Friona.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
