WILDCATS TAKE DOWN CUBS, 45-37, AT THE PIT

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team stole a game on the road at The Pit against Brownfield, 45-37.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 9-6 overall, 2-1 in district play.

Senior point guard, Jeremiah Salazar, took a charge on Nikko Vela to open the contest, and the Wildcats capitalized on the turnover, as junior, Jordan Trevino, drained a three from the right elbow to make the score, 3-0, with 5:58 remaining in the opening quarter. Kyle Suarez answered right back for Brownfield with a three from the right elbow off of the assist from Vela to tie the game, but Littlefield responded again, as junior, Ethan Garcia, grabbed an offensive rebound, dumping it off to senior forward, Chris Brown, who dropped in the lay-up to give them a, 5-3, lead.

Jaden Martinez drained a three from the left wing to give the Cubs the lead, 6-5, but Trevino knocked down his second three of the quarter from the top of the key, making the score, 8-6, with 3:34 remaining in the first quarter. With 1:26 left to play in the quarter, senior guard, Joseph Salinas, drained a three from the left wing off of the assist from Salazar, making the score, 11-6, as the first quarter came to a close.

Caleb Martinez drove the lane and dumped the ball off to Suarez for a lay-up to open the second quarter, but Salinas answered with a three from the right elbow, extending their lead to, 14-8, with 6:25 remaining in the first half.

Brown took a charge on Vela, as the Cubs turned the ball over to the Wildcats. Littlefield capitalized on the turnover, as Jones drove the baseline for a lay-up, pushing their lead to, 16-8, with 5:10 left to play in the half. Jones dropped in a put-back off of a miss by junior Jaron Cabello, but Pete Marroquin answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Jaden Martinez, making the score, 18-10.

With just under two minutes remaining in the half, Jones jumped on a loose ball, as Head Coach Rob Ogle called a time out to prevent a turnover. Out of the break, Jones scored a lay-up off of the assist from Salinas, pushing their lead to double-digits, 20-10. In the closing seconds of the first half, Suarez was fouled on an attempt by Trevino; he made the first and missed the second, but Marroquin was there for the offensive rebound and put-back, trimming the lead to, 20-13, heading into the locker room at halftime.

Trevino opened the second half with a three from the right wing, but Vela answered for the Cubs with a three of his own to make the score, 23-16, with 6:34 remaining in the third

Garcia was fouled on an attempt by Caleb Martinez, earning a trip to the line. He converted one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 24-16. Trevino went coast-to-coast for a Littlefield lay-up, but Suarez answered with a put-back on the other end for the Cubs, as Brownfield took a time out with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Out of the break, Jones drove the lane and dropped in a lay-up for Littlefield, pushing their lead back out to 10 points, 28-18.Vela dropped in a lay-up for Brownfield and a few moments later, Trevino was T’ed up, sending Jaden Martinez to the line for free throws. He converted both shots at the line to make it a six-point game, 28-22.

On the other end, Garcia was fouled on an attempt by Suarez with 3:21 remaining in the quarter. He split the attempts at the line and Trevino followed it up with a three from the left elbow to push their lead back out to 10 points, 32-22.

With 2:22 left to play in the third quarter, Salazar was fouled on an attempt by Deion Blackwell; he missed the first shot, but made the second, making the score, 33-22.

Vela dropped in a lay-up for the Cubs and the Wildcats called for a time out with 1:44 left to play in the quarter. Out of the break, Salinas took a charge on Vela and on the other end, Salinas was fouled on the floor by Vela, who picked up his fourth foul of the game. Salinas converted both free throws, making the score, 35-24.

With time winding down in the quarter, Suarez buried a three from the right elbow to cut the lead to, 35-27, as the third quarter came to a close.

Jones took a charge on Jaden Martinez to open the fourth quarter and Brown followed it up with a lay-up on the other end, off of the assist from Salazar to extend the lead to, 37-27. Suarez drew a blocking foul on Salinas for an and-one opportunity, but missed the free throw, leaving the score, 37-29, as Littlefield took a time out with 5:12 remaining in the contest.

With 4:47 remaining in the contest, Jones was fouled on the floor by Suarez. He converted both free throws, pushing the lead to double-digits, 39-29.

Brownfield took a time out with 3:50 left to play in the game, and out of the break, Jaden Martinez was fouled on an attempt by Jones; he converted one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 39-30.

Jones answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Brown and Trevino took a charge on Suarez and the Wildcats took a time out with 2:07 remaining in the game. Out of the break, Jones was fouled on the floor by Marroquin. He made both shots at the line, but Caleb Martinez responded with a three from the left elbow for Brownfield, trimming the lead to, 43-33.

With 1:32 remaining, Trevino was fouled on the floor by Vela, who fouled out of the contest; he split the free throws, making the score, 44-33. Suarez and Salazar each split a pair of free throws and Blackwell knocked down a three from the left wing in the closing seconds of the contest, as Littlefield held on to beat the Cubs on the road, 45-37.

Trevino led the team in scoring with 15 points, and he was joined in double-figures scoring by Jones, who finished with 14 points.

Salinas netted eight points, while Brown chipped in four points and Garcia and Salazar each finished with two points.
