The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team suffered a tough loss on Friday night on the road against Denver City. They will look to get back on track this week, as they are back on the road to take on the Post Antelopes.

“We left some chances out there on the field, the quarterback got away from us a few times, and we just have to be better,” Head Coach Brent Green said. “We have to get better at executing offensively and we have to be better at tackling defensively. I think we let one slip away and hopefully we learned a huge lesson from it.”

Against Denver City, the Wildcats totaled 304 yards of total offense, including 269 yards rushing and 35 yards passing.

The rushing attack was led by junior tailback, Ty’Jae Chambers, who had 19 carries for 118 yards and one touchdown. Senior slotback, Xavier Esquibel, chipped in seven carries for 92 yards, while senior quarterback, Blake Green, contributed 12 carries for 57 yards.

Senior receiver, Juan Rios, had two catches for 17 yards, while Jaron Cabello had one catch for nine yards and one touchdown.

Defensively, the Wildcats were led by Javen Jimenez and Tyree Jones, who each tallied six solo tackles and combined for nine assisted tackles. Ethan Garcia had four solo tackles, three assists and one sack, while Chris Brown, Tavion Ivery and Caden Longoria each added three solo tackles. Brown also recored an interception in the contest.

Coach Green talked about their match-up with Post, saying, “We are going to have to match them phsysically. They’re a big, strong, physical football team and we’re going to have to match that. We talked a lot about that Saturday morning. We just have to go down to Post, give great effort, play fundamental, sound football on both sides of the football and if we do that, hopefully we can give ourselves a chance down the stretch.”

He added, “Offensively, we’ll have to finish drives. We did that last week, we drove down deep into Denver City territory and turned the ball over on downs; you can’t do that against a team like Post. You have to take advantage of every opportunity that you get and be consistent. I think those are some things we’re definitely going to have to do.”

Coach Green talked about some of Post’s players they will have to keep an eye on, saying, “They have a slew of skill players and guys that make plays for them. Nathan McDaniel is a really, really good football player, but it’s not just him, they have a bunch of playmakers; he is just the one that kind of pops on film.”

The Wildcats are set to take on the Antelopes at 7:30 p.m. in Post.
