Wildcat football season comes to a close against Eagles

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity football team had their season come to a close on Friday night at Wildcat Stadium, as they fell to the Roosevelt Eagles, 42-20, on senior night.

With the loss, the Wildcats finish the season with a mark of 6-4 on the year.

The Wildcats totaled 279 yards of total offense, including 193 rushing yards and 86 passing yards.

Littlefield got the ball to open the contest, as they took over at their own 40-yard line, after a decent return on the kick-off by sophomore, Ian Mendez.

Sophomore quarterback, Chip Green, took a quarterback keeper around the left side for five yards on first down, and kept it himself again on second down, but the Wildcats were flagged for holding, backing them up to second and 12 from their own 38-yard line.

Green’s pass on second down fell incomplete looking for junior, Omar Martinez, but on third down, Green dropped back, dumping off a screen to the left to senior Mason Jones, who turned it up field taking it down the far sideline for a huge gain to set up first and goal from the two-yard line for the Wildcats. Green punched it in on the next play for the two-yard score, making the score, 6-0, after the PAT was blocked by the Eagles with 10:03 remaining in the first quarter.

The Eagles took over on offense at their own 40-yard line and backto- back runs by Angel Olivares had Roosevelt set up with first and 10 from the Littlefield 49-yard line. Nathen Casarez kept it himself on the option to the right, but the Wildcats were flagged for a facemask penalty, making it first and 10 from the 29-yard line.

Olivares took a run to the right for seven yards and Casarez kept it himself on second down, taking it down to the 17-yard line for an Eagles’ first down. Olivares picked up three yards on first down and on the next play, Hunter Woods took the option pitch around the left side for a 14-yard touchdown run with 6:07 remaining in the opening quarter. The PAT by Sebastian Sandoval was wide to the right, leaving the game tied, 66.

The Eagles went for an onside kick and the ball was muffed by junior, Brenden Bowman, and recovered by the Eagles at the Littlefield 49-yard line with 6:05 remaining in the quarter.

The Eagles were flagged for a false start to start the drive, but on first and long, Olivares was able to pick-up the penalty yards to make it second and 10 for Roosevelt. He was stuffed for no gain on second down, but on the next play, Casarez dropped back and hit Woods on the far sideline, who broke a tackle from senior, Daniel Garcia, taking it 49-yards to the house for the score with 4:28 to play in the quarter. The Eagles lined up to go for two, as Casarez kept it himself on an option run to the right, making the score, 14-6.

Littlefield got the ball back at their own 34-yard line, after the fair catch by Josiah Garcia, but after driving into Roosevelt territory, they were faced with a fourth and nine from the Eagles’ 37-yard line. They elected to go for it, but Green’s pass to Mendez fell incomplete for a turnover on downs with 1:47 left to play in the first quarter.

Roosevelt took over on downs at their own 37-yard line and after a false start penalty on first down, three consecutive runs had them set up with second and six just inside Wildcat territory to begin the second quarter. However, the Eagles were again flagged for a false start, making it second and 11 from their own 48-yard line. Casarez picked up four yards to make it third and seven, but on the next play, the Wildcats were flagged for a facemask penalty, moving the ball up to the 33-yard line for a fresh set of downs.

The Eagles were able to punch it in a few plays later on a twoyard rushing touchdown by Olivares, making the score, 21-6, after the PAT from Sandoval with 6:28 remaining in the first half.

Littlefield had nothing going on their next drive, as they were forced to punt it away with 4:30 left to play in the half.

Roosevelt took over at their own 27-yard line and needed just six plays to get to the endzone, capping off the 73-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run from Casarez with 54 seconds left to play in the half. The PAT was good, making the score, 28-6.

The score stood going into the locker room at halftime.

The Eagles got the ball to open the second half, and after a fouryard run by Olivares on first down, Casarez kept it himself on the next play, taking it to the right, before cutting back across the middle of the field for a 77-yard touchdown run with 10:46 remaining in the third quarter. The PAT was no good, making the score, 34-6.

Littlefield took over after the kick-off at their own 34-yard line, as Green picked up a yard on first down. Green hit Javen Jimenez on a pass to the right for five yards, setting up third and four from their own 40-yard line. Green kept it on third down taking it up to their own 49-yard line for a first down, but he was injured on the play and would not return.

Mason Jones carried the ball for two yards on first down, and his pass on second down intended for Martinez fell incomplete, but the Eagles were flagged for a defensive holding penalty, making it first and 10 from the Roosevelt 39-yard line. Mason Jones picked up three yards on a quarterback keeper on first down and back-to-back runs from sophomore, Major McNeese, made it first and 10 from the 24yard line.

The snap on first down was bobbled by Mason Jones as he was taken down for a three-yard loss by Dominic Hernandez. Mason Jones carried the ball on second down, drawing a facemask penalty on the Eagles, taking it inside the 15-yard line to set up first and 10. McNeese picked up a yard on first down, before Mason Jones took it into the end zone on the next play for a 13-yard rushing touchdown with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter. Mason Jones hit Martinez on the two-point conversion to trim the lead to 34-14.

The Eagles were able to put together a 16-play drive that was capped off with a one-yard touchdown run by Casarez on the quarterback sneak with 9:39 to play in the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion run by Casarez was good, pushing their lead back out to, 42-14.

Two possessions later, Mason Jones took a run around the left side, cutting off of a block from senior, Daniel Silvas, before breaking loose for a 98-yard touchdown run with 3:10 remaining in the contest. The PAT was no good, leaving the score, 42-20, as the Wildcats fall to the Eagles.

Green finished the game five-of-10 passing for 86 yards, while also adding 10 carries for 21 yards and one touchdown.

Mason Jones tallied 11 carries for 145 yards and two touchdowns, while Sam Hill added three carries for 14 yards and McNeese finished with three carries for eight yards.

Mason Jones led the receiving attack with two catches for 72 yards, while Martinez tallied one catch for 11 yards and Jimenez had two catches for three yards.
