The Sudan Hornets’ varsity football team got back in the win column on Friday night, as they went on the road and took down Crosbyton, 33-0.

With the win, the Hornets improve to 2-3 overall on the season.

“We did a lot better job of executing and taking care of the ball offensively,” Head Coach John Cornlelius said. “We still had one turnover, but overall we moved the ball well. I felt like we played really well defensively. We just gave up to many free yards with penalties.”

In the first quarter, the Hornets wasted no time getting started, as senior quarterback, Bode Box, broke loose for a 77-yard touchdown run to put the Hornets up, 6-0. They would follow it up later in the quarter, as senior running back, Rustin Penrod, rushed for a 17-yard touchdown to make the score, 12-0, as the first quarter came to a close.

Box accounted for the lone score of the second quarter, as he rushed for a 60-yard touchdown that was followed by a run from Penrod for the two-point conversion to make the score, 20-0, going into the locker room at halftime.

Neither team was able to find the end zone in the third quarter, but Box added a 21-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter and senior quarterback, Garison Bohler, connected with Josue Cervera, for a one-yard touchdown pass to close out the game, 33-0.

The Hornets’ offense racked up 400 yards of total offense, including 391 rushing yards and nine passing yards.

“The running game was really clicking. We have made great strides this year on the offensive line,” the coach stated. “We are really starting to jell with that group. All of our running backs are running the ball well. We still need to find a way to get the passing game going.”

Bohler finished the game oneof-one passing for one yard and one touchdown, while Box was two-of-eight for eight yards.

Box added nine carries for 171 yards and three touchdowns, while Penrod chipped in eight carries for 75 yards and one touchdown. Cervera contributed four carries for 69 yards, while senior, Lane Wilson, added two carries for 47 yards and senior, Callen Cannon, finished with four carries for 23 yards.

Defensively, Wilson led the team in tackles with five and 10 assists, while senior, Beto Diaz, chipped in four tackles and 13 assists and Cannon added three tackles and 11 assists. Penrod, Jordie Bellar, Abram Rodriguez, Salvador Juarez and Gabriel Cisneros each added two tackles in the contest as well.

The Hornets will be at home against Plains on Friday for their Homecoming game.

“Plains has a solid quarterback in Cole Roberts. His favorite receiver is Cooper Hamilton,” Coach Cornelius explained. “We need to limit those two players on Friday night.”

He added, “Our defense did a good job of not giving up the explosive play. That more than anything has hurt us defensively the last few weeks. We would still like to force more turnovers, but the focus has been good on that side of the ball. We have good leadership with this team. I am confident they will be ready to play, but we always address those issues every year with homecoming games.”

Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
