Former Springlake-Earth Wolverine, Diego Sanchez, signed a LOI to play basketball for the Spurgeon College Knights, transferring from Texas Wesleyan University after two years with the Rams. “It’s a great opportunity,” he

“It’s a great opportunity,” he explained. “I feel like I was getting overlooked at my old school and this will be a chance to start new, learn things from different people. I feel like it will benefit me in the long run, both from a basketball standpoint and from an academic standpoint.”

At Spurgeon, Sanchez will be joining former high school team mate, Evan DeLeon, who also recently signed with the Knights for basketball.

“I heard about Spurgeon through my best friend Evan DeLeon,” Sanchez said. “He talked to the coach for me and we went out and visited the campus about a month ago and everything just worked out.”

He added, “I feel like it would be cool for me and Evan to team up again like we did in high school. I also felt like it was a great opportunity for me to start over fresh.”

Sanchez talked about how it feels to be teaming up with his former teammate at the collegiate level, saying, “He is my best friend. I feel like me and him are good on the court together.”

He added, “We accomplished a lot on the court together in high school and I feel like in college we can only get better. He can make me better and I can make him better and I feel like we’re going to do good over there in Kansas City.”

Sanchez talked about his decision to transfer and what drives him to want to continue his basketball career, saying, “I feel like at my old school I didn’t really get the opportunities to show what I can do. But, at Spurgeon, I feel like it is a second chance, a new beginning and a chance to work hard and still get a good education as well.”

He talked about how his time at his previous school will benefit him, saying, “Back at my old school, we played a bunch of high level teams and I feel like those teams have gotten me prepared to play at this level.”

He added, “As far as academics go, I feel like I’ve gotten smarter in the classroom and my biggest goal is to get a degree and I feel like I’m taking strides towards that as well.”

When asked about what he is most looking forward to about playing for the Knights, Sanchez simply said, “I’m ready to work.”

“The past two years I feel I’ve been overlooked,” he stated. “I feel like I have something to prove, I feel like there have been people doubting me, saying I can’t play, but I’m ready to go up there and get to work and work for my spot.”

He added, “On the court, the game is way faster in college; there are bigger people, there is a shot clock, and at this level you have to know certain things to be on the court. You have to play defense, play as a team, know when to do stuff; I feel like having the two years of experience is going to help me, but I still feel there are some things that I can learn.”

Sanchez’s intended major is business.
