NETTES FALL TO IDALOU ON THE ROAD, 73-48

The Sudan Nettes’ varsity basketball team fell to the Class 3A, fourth ranked Idalou Lady Cats on the road on Saturday, 73-48, for their first loss of the season.

With the loss, they fall to 2-1 overall on the season.

Idalou’s Logan Heard got the Lady Cats off and running with a three from the elbow and Taylor Houston followed it up with a lay-up to make it a, 5-0 scoring run to begin the game for Idalou. Sudan sophomore, Braelyn Pointer, go the Nettes on the board with a three from the elbow off of the assist from junior, Addison Boehning, to cut the lead to, 5-3, with 6:55 to play in the opening quarter.

Bo Heard dropped in a lay-up for Idalou, but sophomore, Stevi Lockhart, knocked down a jumper in the lane to make the score, 7-5. Heard answered with back-to-back threes from the wings to extend the Idalou lead to, 13-5, with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The Idalou run continued, as Houston dropped in a lay-up and Heard followed it up with a three from the right elbow to push their lead to, 18-5. Lockhart knocked down another jumper in the lane, but Heard countered with a three from the left elbow to make it a 14-point lead for the Lady Cats with 3:22 to play in the quarter.

With just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Lockhart was fouled on an attempt by Kira Fox. She converted both free throws, trimming the lead to, 21-9.

Heard went coast-to-coast off of a steal for a lay-up and Fox followed it up with another Lady Cat lay-up to make the score, 25-9. Lockhart knocked down another jumper in the lane, but Idalou again answered, as Jaelee Kerr dropped in a lay-up to make the score, 27-11, with under one minute remaining in the quarter.

Senior, Zoey Cantu, knocked down a three from the top of the key, but Idalou closed out the quarter with a reverse lay-up by Houston, making the score, 29-14, as the first quarter came to a close.

Idalou opened the second quarter with a lay-up by Houston, off of the assist from Bo Heard and Houston followed it up with another lay-up, as Idalou called a time out with 6:21 to play in the half, leading the Nettes, 33-14.

Out of the break, Boehning dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound play for the Nettes, but Fox answered with a lay-up to stretch the lead back out to, 35-16. With 4:17 to play in the first half, Heard dropped in a lay-up drawing an and-one foul on sophomore, Elaine Martinez. She converted the free throw to make the score, 38-16.

Lockhart knocked down a jumper on the right side, but on the other end, Kerr was fouled on an attempt by Cantu earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws to make the score, 40-18, with just under three minutes in the half.

With under two minutes to play in the half, Lockhart was fouled on the floor, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both free throws to cut the lead to 20 points, but on the next play, Fox was fouled on a shot attempt and sent to the line for a pair of free throws. She missed the first, but made the second to extend their lead to, 41-20.

With just over one minute remaining in the second quarter, Lockhart drained a three from the top of the key, off of the assist from sophomore, Sydney Cornelius, cutting the lead to, 41-23. With time winding down, Emmy Craig dropped in a lay-up in transition to close out the first half with the Lady Cats out in front, 43-23.

Reagan Dennis opened the second half with a reverse layup and Boehning was called for a charge on the other end, turning the ball back over to Idalou. Houston was fouled on an attempt and converted both free throws, but sophomore, Gracyn Shultz, got the Nettes going in the second half with a three from the right wing off of the assist from Pointer, trimming the lead to, 26-47, with just under six minutes to play in the third quarter. Idalou dropped in a lay-up and the Nettes called a time out on an inbound play to avoid a fivesecond call. Out of the break, Heard hit Houston for a lay-up in transition, but Martinez answered with a three from the right wing for Sudan, off of the assist from junior, Liz Sital, making the score, 51-29.

With 3:28 to play in the quarter, Jaycie Spann was fouled on an attempt by Sital; she split the free throws to make the score, 52-29. On the other end, Lockhart drew a blocking foul on Spann in the lane, earning a trip to the line. She sank both free throws to cut the lead to, 52-31.

Fox answered with a lay-up for Idalou, but Lockhart responded with a jumper from the left elbow off of the assist from sophomore, Kambry Tolbert, making the score, 54-33, as Idalou took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Dennis dropped in a lay-up, making the score, 56-33, as the third quarter came to a close.

Houston knocked down a jumper in the lane to open the final frame for Idalou, but Lockhart answered with a three from the left wing off of the assist from Boehning, making the score, 58-36.

Houston scored on a put-back and followed it up with a lay-up, but on the other end, Lockhart stopped the run with a jumper from the left wing to make the score, 62-38, with 6:15 remaining in the contest. Craig scored a lay-up in transition for Idalou and with just over four minutes remaining, Dennis dropped in a lay-up to extend the lead to, 66-38.

After a Sudan time out, Lockhart knocked down a pullup jumper in the lane, while Boehning followed it up with a lay-up off of a steal, trimming the lead to, 66-42. I4 answered with a lay-up for the Lady Cats, but Lockhart came right back with a jumper from the left elbow for Sudan to make the score, 68-44.

Houston dropped in a lay-up, as the Lady Cats took a time out with two minutes to play in the game. Out of the break, Boehning dropped in a lay-up, but would foul out with under one minute to play in the game.

With just over 30 seconds remaining, Pointer pulled up for a jumper from the left baseline, but Spann would answer with a three from the left elbow, as Sudan fell to Idalou on the road, 73-48.

Lockhart led the team in scoring with 28 points, to go along with four rebounds and three steals, while Boehning chipped in six points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal. Pointer tallied five points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Martinez finished with three points and three rebounds.

Shultz tallied three points, two assists, two steals and one rebound, while Cantu added three points and one rebound. Sital chipped in two rebounds, two assists and one steal, while sophomore, Landree Gonzales, contributed two rebounds and one assist, Cornelius added two steals, one rebound and one assist and Tolbert finished with one assist and one steal.

The Nettes hosted Abernathy on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will host Nazareth on Friday as their season continues.
