The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity basketball team rallied back to defeat the Lamesa Lady Tornadoes on the road on Friday, 53-35.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 7-6 overall, 6-1 in district play.

Tatum Derington opened the game with a jumper from the right elbow for Lamesa and Melissa Lopez followed it up with a three from the right wing, as the Lady Tornadoes opened the contest on a, 5-0, scoring run. Freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, was fouled on an attempt by Lopez with 5:45 to play in the opening quarter. She made one-of-two shots at the line to get the Lady Cats on the board.

Emma Garcia buried a three from the top of the key to stretch the Lamesa lead to, 8-1, as Littlefield called for a time out with 4:37 remaining in the first quarter. Out of the break, Garcia was fouled on an attempt by junior guard, Emily Champion; she split the free throws, pushing their lead to, 9-1.

Senior guard, Geyah Garza, split a pair of free throws after being fouled on an attempt by Daijah Whited, but Tatum Derington responded with a lay-up to make the score, 11-2, with just under two minutes to play in the quarter. Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of an assist from Garza and followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by junior, Brookelyn Gau, trimming the lead to, 11-6. With time winding down in the quarter, Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of the inbound pass from Garza, as the Lady Cats closed out the quarter on a, 7-2, scoring run, making the score, 11-8.

After a Littlefield time out to begin the second quarter, Reagan Derington knocked down a three from the right elbow, but Edgemon again answered with a lay-up off of the assist from Garza, making the score 14-10. With 5:01 remaining in the first half, Garcia banked in a three from the top of the key, extending the Lamesa lead back out to 17-10.

Garza converted a pair of free throws with just over four minutes remaining in the half and with 3:57 left to play in the second quarter, Lamesa called a time out to prevent a 10-second call. Out of the break, Whited drained a three from the right wing to push their lead to eight points, 20-12, but Edgemon answered with another bucket for Littlefield, trimming the lead to six points, 20-14.

The Lady Cats took a time out with 1:58 remaining in the half, and out of the break, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Sagan Oaks. She converted both free throws to make it a four-point game, but on the other end, Reagan Derington was fouled on an attempt by Gau. She made one-of-two shots at the line, making the score, 21-16.

Edgemon dropped in a lay-up off of the assist from junior, Ashtyn Parker, and in the final seconds of the half, Edgemon was fouled on a put-back attempt by Reagan Derington. She made one-of-two at the line, making the score, 21-19, going into the locker room at halftime.

Edgemon opened the second half with a bucket to tie the game for Littlefield and Garza followed it up with a lay-up off of the assist from Gau to give the Lady Cats a one-possession lead, 23-21. Edgemon followed it up with a put-back and with 4:54 remaining in the quarter, Garza was fouled on an attempt by Whited. She split the attempts at the line, making the score, 26-21.

Garza went back door to Gau, who finished the play with a layup and on the next possession, Edgemon was fouled on an attempt by Tatum Derington. She converted both shots at the lead to make it a nine-point Littlefield lead, 30-21.

Garza knocked down a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to double-digits, 32-21, but Whited answered with a lay-up to trim the lead back to single digits, 32-23. Lamesa took a time out with 2:49 remaining in the third, and out of the break, Edgemon dropped in a basket for the Lady Cats to make the score, 34-23.

With time winding down in the quarter, Edgemon scored a putback off of a miss by Garza, but Garcia responded with a lay-up to make the score, 36-25. In the closing seconds of the quarter, Garza dropped in a basket for the Lady Cats, making the score, 38-25, as the quarter came to a close.

Edgemon drew a blocking foul on Reagan Derington, who picked up her fourth foul of the game. She split the free-throw attempts, and on the other end, Clariss Moreno was fouled by Parker and split a pair of free throws, trimming the lead to, 39-26.

With 6:19 remaining, Garcia was fouled on the floor by Garza, earning a one-in-one opportunity at the line. She converted both free throws and Moreno followed it up with a put-back off of a miss by Tatum Derington, cutting the lead to, 39-30.

Garza drove the right side and dropped in a lay-up and Mahalia Huey followed it up with a lay-up of her own to stretch their lead back out to, 43-30. With under five minutes to play in the game, Garza, scored a put-back off of a miss by Edgemon and on their next possession, Garza was fouled on the floor by Garcia, who picked up her fourth foul. Garza made both ends of the one-in-one opportunity, but Garcia answered with a three from the right elbow, making the score, 47-33, as the Lady Tornadoes quickly took a time out to talk things over, with 3:44 remaining.

With 3:31 remaining, Edgemon scored a lay-up off of the inbound pass from the sideline from Gau, making the score, 49-33. Gau converted a pair of free throws and followed it up with a put-back off of a missed free throw by Garza to extend their lead to, 53-33.

Oaks dropped in a lay-up in the final minute, but the Lady Cats took down the Lady Tornadoes in their second meeting of district play, 53-35.

Edgemon led the team in scoring with 27 points and was joined in double-figures scoring by Garza, who netted 18 points. Gau chipped in six points, while Huey added two points in the contest.

The Lady Cats hosted Muleshoe on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue their season on Tuesday with a home game against Dimmitt.

Tip-off is slated for 6:15 p.m.
