LADY CATS PULL OUT A THRILLER OVER FRIONA

The Littlefield Lady Cats’ varsity volleyball team pulled out a huge win on the road over Friona on Friday, in a five-set thriller, 3-2.

With the win, the Lady Cats improve to 3-1 in district play.

The Lady Cats dug themselves into an early hold in set one and were never able to recover, as they dropped the first set, 18-25.

In set two, Jayce Burney’s opening serve sailed out of bounds, but the Lady Cats were unable to capitalize on the next play, turning the serve back over to Friona. Victoria Gonzales sent her serve short of the net for the Squaws, putting the Lady Cats in front, 2-1.

Freshman, Kyndal Edgemon, delivered a kill in front of the block attempt by Reese Stowers and a kill attempt by Friona’s Kambree Kimbrough sailed over the back line, extending the Littlefield lead to, 4-1.

Senior captain, Geyah Garza, dropped in a tip for a kill and Friona’s Kayle Stone sent a hit into the net, pushing Littlefield’s lead to, 6-1, as the Squaws called a time out to talk things over.

Out of the break, Kimbrough scored a kill off of sophomore, Madison McNeese, but on the next play, Breanna Godinez sent a kill over the back line, turning the serve back over to the Lady Cats with the score, 8-2.

Junior, Brynna Ray, answered with back-to-back aces off of Tiffany Sandoval before she sent a serve out of bounds, making the score, 10-3.

A kill by Edgemon was tipped out of bounds by Friona and the Squaws followed it up with a hit into the net by Burney, pushing the Littlefield lead to, 12-3. Junior, Ashtyn Parker, dropped in a tip off of Kimbrough for a kill and senior, Hannah Ballejo, followed it up with an ace to extend their lead to, 14-3.

Kimbrough was called for an illegal block, but Friona was able to end the run when a kill was tipped out of bounds by Ballejo, making the score, 15-4. Garza tipped the net for a kill off of the set from Ray to regain the serve for Littlefield and she followed it up by tipping the net with her serve for an ace, forcing the Squaws to take a time out, trailing, 17-4.

Out of the break, Garza scored a kill off of Anahi Gonzalez and followed it up with back-to-back aces to stretch their lead to, 20-4. Burney delivered a kill that was returned by junior, Danielle Zapata, but the ball landed out of bounds, trimming the lead to, 20-5.

Friona got on a three-point scoring run, but Stowers was called for touching the net on a kill by McNeese, making the score, 21-8.

Friona would not go away, as they rallied for five consecutive points, before McNeese sent over a kill off of the tipped block by Stowers, making the score, 22-13. A serve by Parker was hit out of bounds by Friona, but the Squaws ended the run when Gonzales delivered a kill off of McNeese, trimming the lead to, 23-14. Gonzales’ following serve was

Gonzales’ following serve was short of the net, but the Squaws answered wtiha kill to trim the lead to, 24-15, however, a tip on the next play by Garza was tipped out of bounds by Gonzalez, ending the set, 25-15, to tie the match 1-1.

The Lady Cats got off to a solid start in set 3, as Stowers sent a hit into the net and McNeese tipped over a kill to make the score, 2-0. A hit by Gonzales fell in for a kill in front of Ballejo, but the kill attempt on the next play by Kimbrough sailed out of bounds, making the score, 3-1.

Kimbrough was blocked by sophomore, Kaeleigh Logan and McNeese for a kill, but Edgemon was called for touching the net on the next play, turning the serve back over to Friona with the score, 4-2. Gonzales stepped over the serve line, but Edgemon’s hit on the next play sailed out of bounds, making the score, 5-3.

McNeese scored a kill off of Noelia Bautista and Ray served up an ace off of Kimbrough, before McNeese sent a kill try sailing out of bounds, making the score, 7-4.

Burney touched the net on a block attempt for Friona and Godinez sent a kill out of bounds on the next play, extending the Littlefield lead to, 9-4. Garza delivered a kill in front of Sandoval, but on the next play, Gonzalez had her kill tipped out of bounds by Parker, trimming the lead to, 10-5.

Ray played a ball off of the net on the next play, but Parker’s hit didn’t make it over the net, cutting the lead to, 10-6. The teams exchanged serves out of bounds and on the follwing play, McNeese was blocked by the Squaws, but a save by Ballejo was hit into the net by Friona, making the score, 12-7.

The Lady Cats tipped a ball out of bounds on the next play, but answered with a kill to push their lead to, 13-8. Kimbrough hit a ball into the net and on the next play a tip by Parker was hit short of the net by Gonzalez, making the score, 15-8.

Friona took a time out, and out of the break, they rallied for three points, before McNeese delivered a kill off of Gonzales, pushing the lead back out to, 16-11. McNeese’s next serve was tipped into the net by Friona, before she sent the next serve short of the net, making the score, 17-12.

The Squaws, again, would not lay down, as they rallied back to take a two-point lead, 17-19, after Kimbrough delivered a kill off of junior, Emily Champion. Sandoval sent a serve out of bounds, but the Lady Cats couldn’t capitalize, as Edgemon’s hit on the next play also landed out of bounds, making the score, 18-20.

Garza delivered a kill in front of Godinez and Burney and Kimbrough sent a tip into the net to tie the set, 2020. It was short-lived, as Gonzalez delivered a kill and Parker was called for an illegal hit, making the score, 20-22. But, Gonzales sent a hit into the netand Gara served up an ace to again tie the set, 22-22.

A save by Garza on the next play led to a hit into the net by Gonzales, giving the Lady Cats the lead, 23-22. Friona took a time out, and out of the break, a hit by Burney landed out of bounds, pushing the lead to, 24-22.

McNeese was called for an illegal hit ona tip, but on the next play, Stowers was called for an illegal hit to end the set, 25-23, putting the Lady Cats in front in the match, 2-1.

Littlefield dropped a tight set four, 16-25, to tie the match, 2-2, forcing a deciding set five.

In the fifth set, Gonzales got things started, dropping in a tip for a kill off of the block attempt from McNeese. Kimbrough had her kill tipped out of bounds by Zapata, but on the next play, Burney was called for a double hit, making the score, 1-2.

Kimbrough hit a ball into the net to tie the set, but it was short-lived, as Parker sent a serve sailing out of bounds, making the score, 2-3. Zapata played a ball off of the net and it was hit over by McNeese, leading to a kill attempt that landed out of bounds, hit by Gonzalez, tying the set, 3-3.

McNeese tipped the net for an ace and Kimbrough touched the net on the next play to extend the Littlefield lead to, 5-3. Kimbrough dropped a kill inside the back line to make it a onepoint game, but Garza delivered a kill between Sandoval and Burney and Ray followed it up with an ace, making the score, 7-4.

Garza scored a kill off of Bautista, as Friona took a time out to talk things over. Out of the break, Garza sent a kill out of bounds, making the score, 8-5.

Garza had her kill tipped at the net by Godinez, before falling in for a Littlefield point and Gonzalez followed it up with a hit out of bounds to extend the lead to, 10-5. McNeese mistimed a hit, but the Lady Cats responded, as Garza had a tip hit into the net by Godinez, making the score, 11-6.

McNeese scored a kill off of Sandoval, as the Squaws called another time out to talk things over. Out of the break, a save by McNeese was killed at the net by Burney, trimming the lead to, 12-7, but Stone’s serve sailed over the back line out of bounds and Parker followed it up with a kill past Gonzalez on the back row for a kill, making the score, 14-7.

McNeese had a kill blocked by Stowers for a kill and Kimbrough followed it up with a kill off of Champion, but a tip on the next play by Kimbrough did not make it over the net, as Littlefield took the set, 15-9, and the match, 3-2. The Lady Cats hosted Dimmitt on

The Lady Cats hosted Dimmitt on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. They will continue district play on Saturday, when they host Brownfield for their first meeting of the season.
